Château Haut Caillou

Le Clos du Caillou / Domaine du Caillou

Les Quartz Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2023

🍷 The epitome of elegance in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

☝️ This is not your average high octane CNdP rouge. It’s a pristine, beautiful expression from the Le Clos du Caillou.

😆 We were fortunate to visit this family-run estate in the spring, an informative tour led by Marilou Vacheron, who’s helping to lead winemaking for the estate. Un grand merci for your generosity, Marilou!!

🪨 The soil behind Les Quartz are some of the region’s most distinctive, coming from the lieu-dit “Les Cassanets” with sandy soils beneath a layer of quartz-rich pebbles.

👌 This unique soil is known to produce wines of purity, finesse, and lifted aromatics.

🍇 This cuvée is primarily Grenache next to Syrah, harvested by hand, and fermented in oak through the work of native yeast. The Grenache and Syrah were each aged in oak (different vessels) for 14 mos.

👀 The result is concentrated and lifted with blue and black fruits such as blueberry, mulberry, muddled black cherry, next to peppercorn, meat, violets, crushed stone, clove, vanilla, black licorice, cardamom, and earth.

Great stuff, as usual, Vanessa! Something else that I find pretty interesting about “Les Quartz” is that the Les Cassanets lieu dit is right next to Chateau Rayas….so they share very similar soil. The main difference is the exposure; Rayas is more north facing and protected.

@Jay Kline This is a fun fact—thank you for sharing it! Top quality terroir behind this wine. And considering its price point, it’s an insane value.

@Vanessa certainly better than Rayas 😅😩

Château Sociando-Mallet

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

No notes. Bottle offered to my friend and kept since then, again for a decade or more. Superb currently, can be kept for another 5 to 7 years easily. Cassis, oak and firm tannins, strong acid drive, tar and cigar on the nose. Great stuff ! — 2 months ago

Château d'Arcins

Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois Red Bordeaux Blend 2025

2025 vintage. This is the final blend, still in the barrel. The first vintage for both young in-house winemaker Lucas Puyo and consultant Éric Boissenot. A very positive evolution for this extremely reliable Château, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating the blend for the first time (60%), with 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. — 20 days ago

Les Allées de Cantemerle Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

2015 vintage. This is a very impressive second wine that outperforms the grand vin from lesser vintages. More proof of the ageing capacity of even affordable Bordeaux. Terrific value at less than 20 euros. — a month ago

Château Belle-Vue

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. From the (great) pre-Treasury period, this is a classic Haut-Médoc, well-situated between Giscours and Cantemerle. Solid colour, with little evolution for the vintage. Cassis, cedar, violets and spices. — 2 months ago

I loved the flavor and finish of this. Great smell and one of the few deeper reds I can drink without food—but also thoroughly enjoyed it with our surf and turf dinner. Would buy again for a dinner party wine. — 3 months ago
