The second one. Wow. No words. Montrachet. So elegant. So complex. The nose is an 11. smells like old Monty. Grippy and structured. concentrated and elegant. Insane purity. Wow. Long. Astonishing. — 4 years ago

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 2004

First Monty from Pierre Yves. A bit oaky and lacking in depth. 2004 vintage was hard. But still an excellent Montrachet. I don’t see it improving much with age. — 6 years ago

This is stunning. Dazzling precision and lift. A Monty bright bright nose. Lovely definition and acidity. Beautiful midpalate and length. All round a perfectly poised and delicious white. — 7 years ago

Château Haut-Batailley

Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot Blend 1982

1982. Label has as many age spots as I do, but it’s inside that counts! Mature, but if I may quote Monty Python, “I’m not dead yet!” Not that I’d want to hold on to it much longer, every sip was cerebral and sensual. — 8 years ago

Domaine Ramonet

Bienvenue Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 1989

Tasted blind. Dark gold color, like oil in the glass. Slightly oxidative nose. You can tell this is super ripe just from smelling it. Notes of apricot, stones, mint, warm citrus, wet stones and some coconut. Creamy and heavy in the mouth. Lots of weight. Strikes me as a big bottle from a ripe year and the mint says, Ramonet so I go 92 Monty as my guess. Mixed views on this wine at the table, but I'm a fan. — 3 years ago

Domaine Ramonet

Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 1989

Tasted blind, from magnum. Light to medium gold, heavy in the glass. Wow! nose. Notes of citrus and spearmint, wet stone, lemon creme. Later in the night, some peach, pear, vanilla, iodine and limestone show up with the spearmint constant and pleasant to the nose. Massive acidity. With so much mint, I guess 89 Ramonet BBM (but alas I should have picked up this is the full Monty!). Opened and decanted at noon we're told... at 9pm this was just hitting it's stride. I've had Leflaive Montrachet, Raveneau Clos and Coche CC from great years, and this is right up there in the top white's I've ever had. What a treat!! (M's 60th bday 2nd of 14) — 5 years ago

Philippe Colin

Les Chenevottes Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2012

Annual Christmas tradition of fried chicken and chass monty- in a non stellar year Philippe Colin really brings it strong with super creamy richness, great luscious fruit and acidity cutting cleanly through. Really great QPR (at the time) - wish I had more. — 8 years ago

Domaine Leflaive

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 1986

Tasted blind. Light gold color. Subdued nose. Notes of light citrus and wet rocks. Rich and round. Developed some fine grained acidity with air. But overall this was disappointing compared to other bottles of this we've had, and tonight against the Niellon Chevy and the Morey Monty. I wonder if this had too much air tonight. — 8 years ago

Domaine Leflaive

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 2014

Absolute harmony and royalty in a glass. Popped with Goose in a random afternoon cause, why not. Blown away by its place right now. Balanced with richness and acid and then comes that Monty finish. Holy fuck! Not always moves by Leflaive, but the 14 was special. — 3 years ago

Kongsgaard

The Judge Napa Valley Chardonnay 2019

“Perfectly rounded” was what first came to mind when I drank this. Rich and opulent, yet incredibly seamless. Even in its youth, the mealy and creamy vanilla oak character did not feel out of place, especially against the preserve-like fruits ranging from lemons to apricots. Expectedly long with a dense glycerol-like texture, savoury finish, and energising acidity. Not typically a style that I’d rave about, but credit where credit’s due, the concentration, texture, and oak quality were all remarkable. CW even went so far to say that it was Monty-like, and I’m certain he isn’t the first nor last person to make such a claim. However, we too noted that the warmth and lack of verticality in structure was a dead giveaway of its Napa origin. A contemplative wine of great presence at this point, but probably needs another decade or more to be truly digestible. — 4 years ago

Montefalco Rosso Riserva 2010

2010 the closest I can get to Sangantino in NZ I had been listening to Monty Warden’s Italian Wine Podcast rave about Montefalco it very gives the Sangiovese a stern backbone rich crimson some oak on the nose cherries and tart rhubarb. The perils of being at the bottom of the Pacific is some wines are not available, mind you the great kiwi and Aussie wines make up for some of the loss. — 8 years ago
