Tasted blind. Tawny color, translucent with clear rims. Old wine nose with notes of cola, dark berries, black cherry and a little mint. Starts dry in the mouth with wispy fruit, but with air time, the fruit comes on stronger and you get that old Cal Cab power. Guessed old Cal Cab, but was off a decade on the vintage. With a `65 birth year I get few chances to have something decent from anything grown that year. Very nice.

Going old school Cali for the fourth. This bottle was low shoulder and accordingly I had low expectations. It was brilliant. Some red fruit, bell pepper, white pepper, leather. Made by Cesare Mondavi. 1965.

1965! Totally old Napa. Sandalwood, soy, umami, and still singing..... Still showed depth and layers the next day. This is a testament to minimalist winemaking.

1965 vintage. A classic, lovely, savory Cab. Integrated, mature and still showing well on its 50th birthday, though I would not hold much longer and do not decant. Some delicate dried tobacco leaf overtones. I wish more Cali wines were still made his well, and in this balanced, integrated, food friendly style.

Reddish brown and dark. Berries, cola, caramel, and soy in the nose. Nice roundness but probably showed better earlier in its life. Always nice to try a birth year wine because anything good from 65 is hard/rare to find.
