Gusbourne
Brut Reserve English Sparkling White Blend
Appledore, Kent, England
Head-shivering acid, high minerality and the perfect reduction. Didn’t have the right food to pair with but still enjoyed the wine very much. Understandable why this wine scored so high in blind tasting compared to grand cru champagnes. 53% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 7% Pinot Meunier, wine is from Kent, England which is becoming a hot spot for one of the best in class sparkling wines in the world.

Mar 14th, 2021Straight out of Appledore! Very charismatic and full of personality. Light straw with impressive perlage in the glass. Nice effervescence. The nose is restrained and subtle at first, with some nice Pinot driven notes initially. Cranberries and red apples start things off with lemon zest and dried herbs. Things get pretty autolytic here with effusive notes of toasty brioche buns and roasted almonds.
53/40/7 PN/CH/PM and the Pinot is singing here. Disgorged on 2/19 and aged three years on lees, this needs some time after opening to fully express itself. This is comparable to champagnes in every way and outclasses many of them easily. Charming acidity and wonderful freshness. Even better hours later after it’s had plenty of time to really blossom. It’s appropriately restrained but never closed in.
The palate is fruity but definitely not overly so. Red and green apples, lemon tarts, and pears. Quince and delicate little shortbreads abound. Custard and oranges with a touch of spice. One of the headliners of the English sparkling wine movement shows exactly why it occupies that spot.
