R. López de Heredia
Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Blanco Malvasia Viura
La Rioja Alta, La Rioja, Spain

Liqueur like. Some lightly toasted marshmallow. Preserved lemon. Medium acid.
This is the Tondonia Blanco. @Delectable Wine barely managed to post after half a dozen tries, now won’t let me correct the identified wine.

Understated but I really like this release. The usual notes of cherry, herbs, cedar, leather and earth in a mellow and classically styled package. One of my fave young Tondonias

Not my fav Tempranillo- needs to sleep for another 10 years but I suspect it will not get much better - the 2007 was given a 95 by JS and RP but I don’t get that - way too fruit forward without the integration I was expecting - almost believe I did something wrong in comparing my experience to the critics

Despite being a cool low-rated vintage with light wines in the region, Lopez de Heredia delivers a sumptuous rich but elegant wine. Clear ruby in color; nose is extraordinarily floral from a nice oak profile, and with notes of small ripe red berries, pepper, and coffee; light bodied at 13% alcohol but strangely enough mouth filling with high acidity and a long finish. Super elegant!

Lopez de Heredia. The 2007 Reserva is a homerun, aged with such an grace yet with a vital fruit, balanced between the clusters as it‘s evolving from its primary red fruit that is spiced with a volatile lift, through herbs, cedar and leather before hitting the earth with mushrooms and truffles. The palate glides through with a silky texture, yet with a good grip, well defined presence and a proud posture.

Full-bodied and delicious. Dark cherries, cassis, cinnamon, leather, and dark chocolate. Smooth, satisfying finish.

Nose has oxidized pear slice, browning butter, toasted salt, candied pineapple, beeswax, toasted pistachio and dry crushed granite.
Palate has dried apricot, dried lemon peel, dehydrated green apple slices, toasted ginger, un-salted cashew, (minor) tangerine juice, (minor) vanilla oak notes, yet while showing zingy acidity and a never ending finish. Weighty and light on the palate, simultaneously.
Always one of our favorites in the RLdH lineup, the Blanco's will and can age for decades. This bottle should be close to the current release.
90% Viura / 10% Malvasía; Decanted 3 hours.
Amazing wine...I NEED to find the Gran Reserva, but need much more of this one!
A perfect wine to end cap a long weekend, Labor Day (US), or any weekend really!
