Opened this for my Dad to celebrate fathers day. He loves Napa Cab but doesn't have a lot of experience with aged wine. He loved it. Very velvety and soft texture, smooth and integrated. Dried plums, tobacco, candied olives, wet earth, a kiss of meat. Has that classic sweet core of fruit framed by characters from bottle age. Delicious, balanced, and showing very well right now.

#mondavi typically delivers, but this had an almost vinegar nose and was very astringent. Not expected for a '98.

'98 was a cool vintage knocked by the critics because it wasn't overly ripe. Age has mellowed any bitterness- still hint of dried herbs, but is that a bad thing?
