Rim Rock Vineyard Arroyo Grande Valley Syrah 2013

November’s 4th Friday was a big hit. There is no way I’ll be able to upload all the wines, nor give them the reviews they deserve, but there were a few worthy of mentioning!

New wine to me but right up my Syrah alley. Not as much funk driven as it is savory driven. Leaps from the glass with whole cluster aromatics of stems, sweet peppercorn spice, and very pure rhubarb tart. Light on the palate with added floral notes, smoked meat, iron and a finish of black pepper. Would like to try this again. Thanks

I know Clare can get it for around $99-100. I’m trying to find it below $90, and with no shipping.

This was a magnum so might be aging slightly better than a 750z. Drinking extremely well. Great soft fruit, a little earth, tannins blown off. Smooth, balanced. — 8 years ago

So glad Merlot is making a strong comeback and this is a great example of why. Plush and juicy, with a jammy sweetness. Yummy. Don’t mind @Jeff Hennike and his display of affection. 😂 — 8 years ago

This bottle was a gift from my old friend J. Michael McGarity and is his go cabernet, and his taste is right on point. Grilled 2.5-inch bone-in ribeye, Brussel sprouts, shiitake mushrooms, and baked potato, and this wine was a first-rate accompanist to a fine meal. Wine never gets too strong but is bold as you want a Napa Cabernet to be. Going to visit Mike or add a case to my cellar. — 8 years ago

Brut Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir Rosé 2018

Pretty color of light pink with a golden hue.

Nose of fresh raspberries, citrus, limes, light yeast, green apples, light earth, herbs and minerals.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity, and medium plus sized bubbles.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, limes, light watermelon, under ripe cherries, minerals, light yeast and spices.

Long finish with tangy cranberries.

This is a delicious Sparkling Rosé from Oregon. Elegant and nicely balanced. Fruit forward and easy drinking. Complex and entertaining.

This 7 year old Sparkling is still young, but already drinking beautifully, and will continue to age nicely in the 5 to 7 years.

I had the 2017 vintage a year ago and loved it as well.

Good by itself as a sipping wine.

A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Aged on the lees for 5 years. Disgorged in 2024. A small production of less than 3,000 bottles.

12.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Spring Mountain District Barbera 2016

By far, this is the best American wine I have had in my life. Apart from that, my wife and I had the privilege of enjoying it with our best friend and his family over a delightful dinner( thanks Stephen and Jenni). Despite the privilege of the company we had the opportunity of sipping a very exclusive bottle of barbera from Barnett vineyards (only 2 barrels produced ). Notes of cinnamon, dates and roses. Dried basil and spices on the palate. It was an enriching and pleasant experience. — 7 years ago

Delicious Barbera from Barnett Vineyards! Wine is meant to be shared with those closest to us and we did certainly that this past weekend!! Thick velvety notes of dried strawberries, fresh blackberry and blueberry jam, mocha/chocolate, and vanilla. Slightly higher alcohol than one might expect from Piedmont and more refined (not as spicy) given the age in oak barrels.

Jack & Arden put together a wonderful evening of delicious food and great wines, and a few of us attendees contributed some bottles to enjoy as well. Great night!

Served blind. My guess was left bank Bordeaux. This had some must to blow off but once it did, this was my WOTN. We were all surprised when this was revealed. Potpourri, herbs de Provence, and dried cranberry on the nose. Good weight...strawberry and raspberries, rose petal, old fig. Faint notes of leather. Thanks for bringing

Gold Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

On the nose, ripe, ruby, fruits of; mulberry, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, plum, black cherries, blueberries & creamy raspberries. Vanilla, hints of sweet tarriness, black licorice, whiff of spice, soft understated limestone minerals & crushed rock powder, fruity black tea, hint of fresh herbaceousness, rich, black turned earth, fresh dark floral bouquet and fields of lavender & violets.

The body is rich, ripe & full. The tannins are a little sticky but well softened, round and a touch chewy. The structure, tension, length, balance, tension and balance are very close to perfect and harmonious. Fruits are; mulberry, huckleberry, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, plum, black cherries & creamy raspberries. Vanilla, hints of sweet tarriness, black licorice, whiff of spice, soft understated limestone minerals & crushed rock powder, fruity black tea, hint of fresh herbaceousness, rich, black turned earth, fresh dark floral bouquet and fields of lavender & violets. The acidity is round and rains like a waterfall perfectly over the palate. The very long, ruby, rich, well balance lasts minutes and is absolutely heavenly. Gorgeous, elegant, stunning wine.

Photos of; the vertical tasting we attended of all Hendricks Cabernets; 04, 05, 09 & 12 at the time w/ one of our favorite paintings in the background, Charles Hendricks working in the cellar, very old rootstock from the Stag’s Leap Vineyard where the fruit to make this wine normally comes from and a wide shot of the Stag’s Leap Vineyard.

Producer notes and history...Hendricks Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently sourced from a few of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards. In those near perfect vintages, Charles only makes a small production wine of around 250-300 cases. Charles only produces it when he has exception fruit. He’s made Hendricks Cabernet in; 2004, 2005, 2009, 2012 & 2014. Notice he didn’t make Hendricks Cabernet in a great vintage year like 2013. He wasn’t happy enough with his fruit in 2013 to put his name on it. That says a lot and maybe all you need to know about his standard for quality. I do know what wine his 13 fruit made as I’ve had and it’s an unbelievable wine for far less money.

Charles also makes a fantastic Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands that is really quite amazing. Especially, if you give it 5 or 6 years in bottle. All his wines are sold exclusively through the Hope & Grace tasting room in Yountville as he is also the Hope & Grace Winemaker.

Charles graduated in 1982 from UC Davis in viticulture. He was also able to tailor his own curriculum and was one of the earliest to integrate winemaking and viticulture course work. Having knowledge of both viticulture and enology forms the basis for his well-rounded winemaking.

Over the years Charles has worked in both Napa and Sonoma Counties, gaining hands on experience in all aspects of winemaking. He has a strong reputation for excellence. In his career, he’s been a consulting winemaker for many wineries; Viader, Barnett Vineyards, Paoletti Vineyards, Regusci Winery, James Cole, T-Vine and Tamayo family Vineyard.

I asked Charles, “how does he make wines that are amazingly good in their youth but will age effortlessly for 15-20 years?” His answer was simply this, “its not that hard, you just have to know the perfect time to harvest fruit.” I would agree with that to a degree. But, you also have to know how to gently guide fruit onto it’s path into the barrel and not get in the wine’s way or overwork the process.

Brut Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2018

Light yellow in color with a golden hue.

Strong nose of citrus, brioche, lemons, green apples, herbs, light yeast, minerals, spices and sea salt.

Medium plus in body with high acidity.

Dry on the palate with limes, lemons, tart green apples, minerals, light yeast, sea salt, light earth and herbs.

Long finish with limes and lemons.

This is a very tasty 7 year old sparkling wine from Oregon. Still young but already enjoyable. The nose is already very pretty, but the palate needs more bottle time.

Nicely balanced, engaging and interesting. Fruit forward and complex. Crisp and refreshing.

Starting to drink nicely now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Would be nice to revisit it in 5 years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after an hour of airtime, when the complexity comes in.

Not bitter, and good by itself or with food.

A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Aged on the lees for 5 years. Disgorged in 2024. A small production of less than 3,000 bottles.

12% alcohol by volume.

Wow. Pinot from Argentina! And it was fantastic. If I tasted this blind, I probably would have called Oregon or burgundy. Super funky upon opening with a bit of iron and stewed red and black fruit. After time in the glass, distinctly stemmy/herbaceous notes showed the use of whole cluster. Rose petal and black cherry finish. Very good structure. Boarding on perfection Barnett’s 2014 PNV wine (bottle 23 of 60) is simply stunning. Incredible nose of sweet mountain berries with a hint of burnt ember. The palate explodes with a cedar berry vanilla bomb that lingers for well over a minute. It concludes with a kiss of meat drippings and iron at the very end. Wow — 8 years ago
