Peter Lehmann

Stonewell Barossa Shiraz 1993

At the Peter Lehmann dinner at the Downs Club. Thanks to Clintyn Barnes for bringing this 1993 from his own cellar. Quite savoury and mellow- just medium weight with fully resolved Tannins. Clintyn agreed that 1993 was not a particularly good vintage in the Barossa so this was a welcome surprise. More like the nose of an old Burgundy with forest floor sous bois characters. — 7 years ago

Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Girl computer Cru Bourgeois. You guys. Get into the Cru Bourgeois it doesn’t mean you are bougie (which Merriam-Webster just decided to include in their dictionary so if you don’t know what I mean...look it up), it just means you have high standards and a way with bargains. Consummate old world. It’s all like hi I’m all dark berries and black currant and violets and we’ve been having a party with our buddy tar but hidden in a pencil box because we are supes into graphite. Fuck this ink nonsense we like stones and lead. This wine is badass but it really would like some food too methinks. Earth and cassis. I’d very much like a mushroom pizza on the side. — 8 years ago

Anthill Farms

Comptche Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

Somm David T
9.0

This Anthill is well extracted. Too much for how I like my Pinot’s. It is also has a slight alcohol burn in the back of my throat which; I & other professionals consider a fault in wine. It’s like Oregon fruit & florals meet the over-extraction of Bella Glos. That aside, there are some merits here.

The nose reveals slightly stewed, yet ruby & candied fruits of; blackberries, strawberries, dark cherries, plum, creamy raspberries and notes of pomegranate. Pronounced baking spices; vanilla, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Black, rich earth, black licorice, sweet tarry notes, limestone, dark spice, dry, crushed rocks and bright; red, dark, blue and purple florals.

The body is big, thick and lush. She still has sticky, meaty, tarry tannins. The structure & tension is quite big. The length and balance are good but, still require some more time to hit their peak. Slightly stewed, yet ruby & candied fruits of; blackberries, strawberries, dark cherries, plum, creamy raspberries and notes of pomegranate. Pronounced baking spices; vanilla, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Black, rich earth, gravely, dark volcanic minerals, black licorice, sweet tarry notes, limestone, dark spice, stem inclusion, leather, hints of graphite, dry, crushed rocks and bright; red, dark, blue and purple florals. The acidity is round and good. The big, long, finish is, rich, ruby, elegant, well polished and persists for minutes.

Photos of; one of the vineyards they source fruit, three friends & partners that founded Anthill; Anthony Filberti, David Low, and Webster Marquez who met while working at Williams Selyem and the staff working the process in the cellar.

Webster Cellars

Proprietary Napa Valley Red Blend 2013

Truly noteworthy wine drinking wonderfully now and will only get better with some time. Living in Bordeaux and all over Europe allowed namesake and winemaker Keith Webster a personal look at the world's best wines. Settling in Napa he's now crafting ultra-luxury micro productions of wines he was inspired by, like this one called Right Bank. At 13.9% alcohol it resembles a right bank in more than name. Delicious, "farmer's market fresh" dark red fruits, shimmering garnet/ruby color with soft notes of spice, vanilla, cinnamon and lavender. Pure, clean and fresh mouth feel, good acid, tight, neutral tannins. 100cs production, best of luck finding. Delicious! — 9 years ago

Brennan Vineyards

Reserve Tempranillo 2013

The Brennan Tempranillo Reserve 2013 is made from 78% Tempranillo grapes and 22% Mourvedre. Winemaker Todd Webster made it dark and delightful. The nose shows black fruit, but it has to fight its way past the spiciness of the grape and the oak. Vanilla, tobacco and sage come through ahead of the fruit. The flavors also lean to the savory side, with blackberry cutting through the cedar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Great tannic structure calls for a big rib eye steak. — 11 years ago
