50-year old wine. Drinking an old wine is adventurous and exciting. Upon opening, it was clear from the aroma and color that the wine was still alive! We could still taste the remaining fruits supported by the good balance of acidity. The wine went downhill after two glasses. With social-distancing in place, it was a quiet night but a wonderful moment tasting its history.

Bodegas Caro “Petit Caro” Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (Argentine)

Caro is a collaboration between Catena and Rothschild. Pop and Pour. Wow, weightless. Great mouthfeel. Great QPR. Neither Malbec nor Cabernet Sauvignon stands out. All blended in, becoming an easy-to-drink pleasant wine.

カテナとロスチャイルドがコラボしたカロ(Caro)によるマルベックとカベルネのブレンドPetit Caroを試しました。開けてすぐに飲みましたが、重さを全く感じさせない、口当たりが滑らかで飲みやすいワイン。コスパ高し。マルベックとカベルネがそれぞれ主張し合うことなく仲良く共存しているようなワインでした。

Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Mike Grgich, one of the founders of Grgich Hills, was the one who put California chardonnays on the world wine map winning the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 with his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. Probably more well-known for its chardonnay, Grgich Hills also makes great age-worthy cabs. This 2010 cab is fully integrated. Beautiful. Rich, dark berry fruits with cedar, mocha, leather notes.

ガーギッチと言えば、カリフォルニアワインの名声を世界に知らしめる契機となった1976年のパリ・テイスティングで白ワインのトップとなった1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnayをつくったことで知られるマイク・ガーギッチが設立したワイナリー。白ワインの印象が強いですが、熟成に値する素晴らしい赤もつくっている。2010年のカベルネは、凝縮したリッチなダークベリー系のフルーツにシダー、モカ、レザーなどが見事に調和した素晴らしいワインでした。

Dark chocolate, cocoa, cherry, plum, cedar with peppery notes. Slightly oxdized with a funky nose at first. Cabernet Franc contributes to this rounded softness.

ダークチョコレート、ココア、チェリー、プラム、シダーウッドや黒胡椒など。開けたては少し酸化が進んだようなファンキーな香り。カベルネフランが多くブレンドされているからか、とても優しい、柔らかな舌触り。

Our New Year wine is 2014 Bryant Family DB4. Thought it would be still young but couldn’t resist. Great concentration. Wow, nice juice. The tannins are soft and round. Enjoyable now, but the wine is still young and needs further aging. Great with meats.

新年最初のワインは、未だ早いかなとは思いつつ2014年Bryant Family DB4を開けてみました。ブライアントファミリーのセカンドワインDB4。素晴らしい凝縮感。タンニンはまろやかで美味しく飲める状態でしたが、まだまだ若く、更に熟成させて飲みたいワイン。肉料理との相性は抜群でした。

I remember my first experience with this floral, beautiful wine as clearly as if it had happened just yesterday.

2011 Spottswoode Family Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (The 30th Anniversary Bottling)

I could not wait any longer and decided to open this. Trust the producer. 2011 was a difficult year, but the very top winemakers make great wines under the most difficult condition. Cassis, dark chocolate, plum, mint, herbs, pencil and minerals. Lighter than expected. Medium-bodied. Delicious. Would love to compare it with their 2010 vintage which RP gave 100 points.

開けるには早いかなと思いつつも待ち切れず、スポッツウッドの2011年をトライ。2011年は非常に難しい年でしたが、トップクラスのワインメーカーが手掛けるワインはさすが。カシス、ダークチョコレート、プラム、ミント、ハーブ、鉛筆の芯やミネラルなど。思っていたより軽めでミディアムボディーな仕上がり。美味しくいただきました。近い将来、ロバートパーカー氏が100点をつけた2010年と飲み比べてみたいものです。
