Calera Wine Company
Central Coast Pinot Noir
Central Coast, California, USA
I don't especially like Cali Pino but, credit where credit's due, this was very good. Very pleased to have found another exception to my aversion in Calera's entry-level cuvee. In fact, I thought it was a Bourgogne in our blind, and perhaps even better than some I've had. Attractive aromas of black cherry, plum, earth, baking spice, and subtle oak influence. The palate's where both deceit and truth comes to play. At 14.1% abv, the wine is surprisingly bright and juicy, with no impression of warmth, or even the dreaded marmalade flavour that I get in many warmer-climate Pino's at all. As with many blinds, the origin only becomes obvious after the wine was revelead, showing distinct compote and cola characters in the back end. This is an excellent value buy!
