Jul 7th, 2025It was okay, but I’d like to find an old style fume that has a grassy palate rather than every bottle tasting like citrus.

Vignobles Lacheteau – Pouilly-Fumé / 2023
Pouilly-Fumé AOC – Loire Valley / France 🇫🇷
Overview
100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from the eastern, upper stretch of the Loire River, where Pouilly-Fumé sits opposite Sancerre. Flint-rich (silex) and limestone soils drive a brighter, more mineral-forward profile. The 2023 vintage leans casual and approachable, emphasizing freshness over depth.
Aromas & Flavors
Fresh citrus peel, lemon zest, green apple, and subtle white peach, supported by flinty smoke, wet stone, and faint herbal tones. Hints reminiscent of Quincy-style Sauvignon Blanc appear, adding softness and gentle floral nuance without excess fruit.
Mouthfeel
Light to medium-bodied with brisk, clean acidity. Linear and refreshing, with a slightly sharper acid line than Sancerre and a dry, easygoing finish. Designed more for immediate pleasure than contemplation.
Food Pairings
Goat cheese, oysters, shrimp, grilled white fish, simple salads, asparagus, or light poultry dishes.
Verdict
A very casual, easy-drinking Pouilly-Fumé that delivers typicity without intensity. Flinty, bright, and straightforward—ideal for everyday Loire Sauvignon enjoyment rather than cellar ambitions.
Did You Know?
Pouilly-Fumé often shows more flint-driven minerality and sharper acidity than Sancerre due to its silex-heavy soils and slightly warmer eastern exposure across the Loire River.
🍷 Personal Pick Highlight
While this 2023 is enjoyable and well-made, I personally preferred the 2024 vintage, which shows greater precision, better balance, and a more compelling mineral expression. The 2023 feels lighter and more casual by comparison, whereas the 2024 truly captures what I look for in Pouilly-Fumé.
