Corney And Barrow

Taylor Fladgate

Taylor Vintage Port Blend 1963

Taylor’s 1963 Vintage Port ( bottled Corney & Barrow)
Quite light in colour , light garnet ruby , wide watery garnet rim . Quite spirity , with some high toned spiced dried plum , warm fire side hints, currants and liquorice. On the palate this is quite sweet and rich , dried fruits , spice and caramel , menthol , aniseed hints . Balanced acidity , though quite spirity on the palate and with a pretty sweet profile. Raisins , dried dark fruits , with a menthol , liquorice hint , dried spices . Good length and balance overall . This is still in a good place , though the alcohol does stick out a bit. This has now mellowed and is fully mature: it’s the spice and tertiary complexity that makes this wine so interesting as the density of fruit is slightly less than it would have been when I ‘regularly’ drank this 20 years ago. So, drink now and over the next few years , though I doubt there is any real rush . Bottled Corney & Barrow , with no label on this one , as is quite normal for these English bottlings.

Hyde De Villaine

Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2011

My wife hates a Chardonnay so I rarely get to have them anymore out for dinner. I drank this with a plate of baked penne and it was quite good. None of the mega oak flavours I worry about and much more acidic than I thought. Still don’t think it would work for my wife but for me was a delightful wine! That being said I think it’s probably 2x more expensive than its worth so it’s likely my last bottle. Bought from Corney and Barrow in London. — 6 years ago

Bloomer Creek Vineyard

Tanzen Dame Barrow Vineyard Reserve Dry Riesling 2017

Honey, oranges, mangoes, peaches. All the tropicals.

Ah man, Bloomer Creek just makes me happy. Every time I see their bottles at a retailer, I pretty much have to cop it. Today it was from Frankly Wines in TriBeCa.

Great selection and knowledge at this shop.

A little character in this one, reminding me a bit of an orange wine. Dry and got a nice minerality, but also a honeycomb sweetness and finally a bit of a zing (kind of like the herby citrusy crossover that pine needles have). I went on a guided hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Biologist guide pointed out all the things we could eat in the forest. And we did. No one got sick. My dad told long, unnecessary stories to the other troop members. Ah, simpler times.

This is a glass where you close your eyes, everything else melts away, and you enjoy the simplicity, the balance, the crisp sips.

Weston hosted Friday group today and was it definitely a can’t miss tasting. Wow! Absolutely knocked it out of the park with heavy hitter after heavy hitter. Similar to Wednesday group, all wines are tasted blind.

At 39yrs old, strutting just fine. Didn’t have the smooth honeyed finish of Sauternes and based on the color, I was unsure if it was port or not (guessed 30+ yr tawny port). Cherry liqueur, toffee, and almond.
