Cuvée Godefroy Côte de Brouilly Gamay 2016

Lyle Fass
9.5

In an amazing place. Nose has some reduction which will blow off but man o man that palate. The acid is just so intense and layered, juicy and explosive fruit like you cannot believe. Just cracking! So tasty. It’s got an urgency on the palate that makes this so special. Sappy for days and unreal velvety and mineral drenched tannins. My goodness this is brilliant. Nose has some smoke and leather as well. Unreal freshness. I mean the freshness is like young dry Riesling. Genius stuff and in the window. Let’s see what air does. — a month ago

@Lyle Fass aged cru Beaujolais from a producer like Thivin is special. I bet this will be still awesome in 2036!

@Jay Kline it’s got the guts for long aging. But at 9 years old it was so strong. Love the old vine sap here and the insane energy.

Cuvée La Chapelle Côte de Brouilly Gamay 2022

Apropos, the vines for “La Chapelle” are adjacent to the chapel perched at the very top of the Mont Brouilly where it is quite dry and the soil is very poor. The vineyard is also remarkably steep making manual harvest essential.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three days. Fairly consistent throughout but I felt it was most enjoyable on Day 2 and 3. The 2022 “La Chapelle” pours a deep ruby/purple color; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is youthful and fresh with beautiful notes of tart blackberries, red plum, wet stone, a combination of red and purple flowers, licorice, dried green herbs, some wood varnish. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and has a stiff spine of minerals. This is a cerebral wine compared to “Godefroy” (which is almost quaffable in comparison). Drinking well now to enjoy its freshness but will undoubtedly drink well through 2037+. Thanks for the assist

I love these but for me leaner vintages (2021/2014) are the true stars.

@Lyle Fass I bet Godefroy in particular during leaner years whereas La Chapelle is better in the more solar years. I feel the same way about a lot of CdP…probably why I love 2014 so much.

Godefroy Côte de Brouilly Gamay Noir

Yesterday we straight to Le Bon George after arriving in Paris and had the best meal! Exhausted so I smartly went with what was recommended. This wine paired perfectly with porch chop and mushroom sauce, plus a French accent. @Le Bon George — 2 years ago

Cuvée les Griottes Côte de Brouilly Gamay 2016

Good balance. Very good acidity. A hint of heat and green pepper. Very good but not the best vintage of this wine. I had the godefroy. ... as this opens the green and heat go away. Needs 45 minutes. — 6 years ago
