Note: this rating is for this vintage when in its prime (secondary development)… as I pull this from the cellar it is clearly in 25% decline from tertiary development. as I have come to learn, very hot, high sugar vintages do not work long-term for 100% PV bottlings. There simply is not enough tannin and acid to contend with the higher alcohol/sugars for long term aging - so 2010’s are out of runway at about 8ish years. I pushed this one to 11… But that is the purpose of my experimentation in East Coast wine aging. So what did it taste like: Mulberries and leather with sweet prune finish - quite similar to an UNFORTIFIED PORT. served admiral Voy with our fatty brisket as a stand in for California Zinfandel. Take your glasses off and make sure you get every inch of your self into the bouquet of this Sonoma/Napa border red.
Rich, peppery, French cut picnic watermelon, creamy, cinnamon.
Wow. Upon first sip, lemon, cool, smooth mouthfeel, not too creamy, but not too tart either. Good balance. Enough zip to awaken the taste buds, but also enough balance to ground you in an earthy, lemon rind, pepper heaven.
Combines with the deep and impressive bouquet, this wine makes for a well-balanced blend of elegance and complexity.
Truly a pleasure to drink.

Hawkes Bay is crushing it with this wine! East red that would be great with most food pairings. Would also be a great summer wine with a slight chill, def crushable! — 3 years ago
Delicious pet-nat. $25 restaurant price. — 4 years ago
Like a flavorful wine sundae—biting into a medley of strawberry, pear, and maraschino cherry with the perfect vanilla creamy on top. — 5 years ago
Winery notes, Sun Chase Vineyard is planted on the west-facing hillside where the cool Petaluma Gap collides with Sonoma Mountain, this site overlooks a broad sweep of the county from the San Pablo Bay to north Santa Rosa. Our Chardonnay block with an east-west row aspect sits on a sun-drenched, rocky incline at 1000' where fruit yields are naturally limited with small clusters and aromatic fruit. Technical Notes: 76 clone, Whole-cluster pressing, 100% native yeast primary fermentation, 100% wild malolactic fermentation, 11 months in low toast, air-dry 3-year-old French oak, 25% new."

This fella has lot bottle rest ahead...it took a good bit of air to unpack the present inside. True to Mark Fedor’s skill and style, he hit a right bank bullseye again. Year over year, this rivals KingFamily’s meritage program for CONSISTENCY. Wild bramble and forest underlayer elements combine to OVERACHIEVE. At $22, one of the BEST values on the east coast. Is worth noting that there are no fireworks here, just consistent depth of concentration with very clean and functional tannins. It will be interesting to see how Nate shifts the program - as we already see with the wild meadow Chardonnay — 8 years ago

Flavours of tropical fruit and gooseberry with a herbal edge. Vibrant full bodied palate. Fresh money acidity gives a refreshing finish. — 9 years ago
In our binary world- this is a feminine format. Pinot weight and body with East Coast fruit expression. Nice aromatics couple with punchy acidic flow. The type of plummy acid that make the mouthfeel “float” with a grace more impactful than the actual fruit. Compelling, especially with the right cuisine ;) 1 bottle remains - target 2026? 91 pt because it’s NC and relatively weighted — 5 years ago
East drinking. Great wine for the price. — 5 years ago
East coast ladies of Chicago wine tasting - really nice and light - not too sweet, fruity and flowery, very drinkable — 6 years ago
#Nebbiolo is a surprisingly rare grape. Even in its native Piedmont, it accounts for only 8% of vineyard land. There are fewer than 100 hectares planted in the United States. 🕵️♂️🍇
Over 80% of prewar Italian immigrants came from Sicily and Southern Italy. Piedmont was the wealthiest and most politically dominant region. But if fortunes were reversed, could Nebbiolo have taken Primitivo/Zinfandel’s place as a grape relatively uncommon on the boot but dominant in California? 🤔🇮🇹🇺🇸
Probably not. The Nebbiolo vine is *not* for beginners. It flowers early and ripens late, making it susceptible to both spring and autumn frosts. It loves the occasional fog bath (some say the name is derived from ‘nebbia’, Italian for fog ☁️☁️☁️) but is prone to the mildew that may result from such humid conditions. Its fussiness would make Pinot Noir blush: it demands southwesterly exposure, a proper gradient, constant sun above, and fog licking at its toes. #diva
Sound anything like California’s Central Coast? 🌅
In the Santa Maria Valley, where the East-West Transverse Range bends back into the North-South Coastal Range, it’s possible. Vineyard selection still requires extreme discretion - an eye like @JimClendenen’s, perhaps.
Jim began the Nebbiolo program at the legendary #BienNacido vineyard in 1994. Production is small, but if you track down his “The Pip” Nebbiolo, it will only run you about $30. You’ll believe anything is possible when you have real California Nebbiolo of this quality come wafting out of the glass at you! 🙌🙌
🏞.“The Pip” is named after Jim’s old cellar dog Pip, a border collie. So it only seemed right to include one of our own pips! 🐈 — 7 years ago
From the first certified Biodynamic winery in New Zealand comes this estate single vineyard Chenin Blanc. Bright acidity balanced nicely by subtle sweetness and very faint saltiness. Textured, almost waxy. Good tension on the finish.
This single vineyard Chenin Blanc is one of the “1001 wines to try before you die” published by Penguin 2008. I don’t know about that, but this 2016 vintage is certainly a beauty. Gisborne is located in the east coast of the North Island very close to the Pacific. — 8 years ago
