Williams Selyem

Lewis MacGregor Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023

Williams Selyem – Pinot Noir – 2023
Drake Estate Vineyard – Russian River Valley – USA 🇺🇸

Overview
A beautifully refined and expressive Pinot Noir sourced from the renowned Drake Estate Vineyard, one of the crown jewels of the Russian River Valley. The 2023 vintage highlights Williams Selyem’s signature delicacy and precision: pure fruit, lifted aromatics, and a seamless texture that defines top-tier RRV Pinot.

Aromas & Flavors
Red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry accented by rose petal, orange zest, and light baking spice. Subtle forest floor, tea leaf, and vanilla whisper in the background. Elegant, layered, and aromatically captivating.

Mouthfeel
Silky, smooth, and wonderfully balanced. Medium-bodied with bright natural acidity, fine tannins, and a graceful, mouthwatering finish. A perfect interplay of delicacy and depth.

Food Pairings
Duck breast, truffle risotto, cedar-plank salmon, roasted mushrooms, or creamy cheeses like Brie or Camembert.

Verdict
A lovely masterpiece from Drake Estate Vineyard, delicate, smooth, and utterly delicious. This is quintessential Russian River Valley Pinot at its most graceful and refined. Cheers!

Did You Know?
Drake Estate Vineyard sits along the Russian River’s cooling corridor, where fog rolls in daily. This extended hang time allows for exceptional fruit purity and aromatic intensity, one reason it’s one of Williams Selyem’s most prized vineyard sources.

Alec's Blend Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Nice nose of red and dark fruit. I pickup creme di casis, strawberries, chocolate, and oak. Taste is consistent with nose with good acidity and nice structure. Tannins are restrained. This is a nice enjoyable, fruit forward wine. About 30% Merlot, which is where I would bet the fruit comes in. Could be nice with a number of beef and heavier sauces pork dishes. — 5 years ago

Unfiltered Prince Edward County Pinot Noir

Light ruby in color. It’s from Canada. And it smells of dry grasses and wild flowers. Or maybe those are just the smells stuck in my nose. It’s family time here at the lake house in Canada, with all the tension and buried hurts family time can entail. Enter this Pinot noir. The scent of violet, the taste of rose petals, tart cherries, and red currants. It’s new and familiar at the same time. Brings me right back to myself. Families are families, for better or for worse. Then wine, old grapes made in a new way, complex and fleeting, helps give you the long view and takes you right back home. — 7 years ago

93-94 range

Hard to believe this is a 17yr old WA state Syrah. 100% varietal, all from Les Collines vineyard. 13.9ABV

Sporting a deep purple color even at 17yrs, this feels like it is just now entering prime time. Big aromatics of peppered smoked meats, whole cluster/green herbs, red and blackberry fruits. Floral and balanced with fruit but spices/herbs in the background. Where Cayuse (and all Christophe Baron/Rocks district) wines trend to the savory/sanguine profile (which I enjoy), this balances the dark fruit, smoky/charcoal, savory/spice driven side of Syrah in its typical rustic/feral profile. Nice bridge between cool climate New World Syrah and ripe vintage Cornas. Finish is more vibrant and less requiring of food as the CB wines do.

Followed over three days and shockingly held up. If you have a bottle, open and enjoy but no immediate rush.

This is an unusual blend - Cab, Merlot and Syrah - and it comes off a bit heavy handed (I tasted it blind and guessed that it was from Paso Robles). — 7 years ago

Stanners Vineyard

Prince Edward County Pinot Noir 2021

A beautifully elegant fruit forward wine using the grapes from Stanners’ own vineyard & blending them with the grapes from Devil’s Wishbone. The first taste is restrained & austere before the fruit bursts forward.

Prince Edward County remains the best spot in Canada for show stopping Pinot Noir.

Paul Hobbs two nights in a row! Gold color. Very deep, thick wine with subtle acidity. Aged pineapple with stone fruits and subtle apricot, peach, and melon elements. Fairly unique and complex in my mind. I prefer other single vineyard Paul Hobbs Chards style wise but wasn’t bad by any means. 93.5 rounding up. — 3 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Had this tonight to contrast/compare 2015 to 2013 reserve we had Friday. More fruit forward with blackberry and cedar notes. Lovely black/blue fruit mid-palate and a bramble and cedar@finish. just needs more time in the bottle. Will be spectacular in 5 more years — 7 years ago
