Cold Hand Winery

Ribes Rubrum 2015

This is 2015 Cold Hand Winery "Ribes Rubrum." Made in Denmark from Red Currants, this dry bubbly is bottle fermented and has plenty of stuff floating in it. Brownish orange in color. Very bubbly and very sour! Tastes like sour berries and green garden clippings. I've never had anything like this. $25, I'd probably get one more for Christmas with the relatives. It's a conversation piece.

This charming wine is keeping me company while I bake tonight. User reviews are all over the place, but in my humble opinion, this 2022 is very good. A light bodied Neb, with bright juicy fruit, bitter but pleasant floral, and a tasteful kiss of oak which lends some depth. Good holiday wine.

This is a great CC. This sangiovese blend has typical sour cherry flavors enhanced by violets, thyme, oregano, leather, and sweet tobacco. Very well balanced with juicy acidity and medium tannins. Great finish. This is a real bargain at $20!

A very happy find, this grenache/syrah blend. It's heavy on the cassis, licorice, and stone. Some blood orange on the bitter-ish finish. But, not unpleasant in any way. I agree with Scott's note: This wine does go down softer than most CDR's. @Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego

Polished off this bottle tonight with my buddy. It always tastes like a high rye bourbon, but there's no rye in the mashbill. Spicy heat, cinnamon candy, sweet cornbread, and earthy tannins. Sorry to see it go.

Congrats on you and your buddy’s accomplishment. 🤣🤣 Half a bottle of brown stuff would pert near kill me. Worst concert by far I ever attended was The Kinks in Philly in ‘78 or ‘79. They purposely put on a bad show. So weird. Never listened to ‘em since.

This wine has the kitchen sink in it. Dark fruit is hiding under the prominent leather, herbs, mint, tobacco, and earth. It's a fine sipper for jazz nights by the fireplace. Made my teeth red.

You've all had this before. It's Penfold's budget offering, and it's the secret weapon in my braised short rib. Cue Julia Childs, "A splash for the short rib, a half bottle for me..." Holy man, this leaves you feeling like you ate a pack of Sour Patch Kids. Puckering. Super sour blackberries, herbs, and some cedar tannins. Long finish.

A very pleasing CDP. Vibrant ruby color, a quick whiff of smoke on the nose. Juicy red fruit with good structure. I tried (without luck) to find a Rotie from Stefane Ogier on the recommendation of @Doug Powers but I did find this wine. Same Ogier?

@Dave, I think this is a different Ogier (as I don’t believe Stephane makes CdP), look for northern Rhone with “Stephane Ogier” on the label.

PNP after shoveling the driveway. Inviting nose with dry cocoa powder prominent. This wine drinks like Gamay. Sour, over ripe strawberries, tangy raspberries, a bit of chalky tannins that are short lived. Minus 1 point for a metallic bitterness on the finish.

Wow, this is spectacular! Plenty of life ahead of it, too. The wine is a very pale brick color. It is fresh and vibrant, but beautifully complex. Red sour cherries, juicy and acidic, leather, mint, a little dust on the rose petals. Medium plus on the tannins. I would love to have this with a lot more age. Should be a great wine for a charcuterie spread, and at $19 I feel like a highway robber.

@Dave, I knew zippo about this producer until maybe 16-18 years ago. There was an importer/retailer east of California where I purchased bottles of 1996/2000/2003 Vallana wines, I have a few left, but they seem somewhat immortal (I guess Nebbiolo is the key). I also purchased four vintages of the early 2000s Wynns Black Label Cabs from the same source (all sub-US$15), which I thoroughly enjoyed — @Bob McDonald could fill in on what a bargain those wines always are!!!

@Doug Powers , your stories never disappoint, and I don't know how you can remember so many wines with such clarity. I can barely remember what I've had this year without looking at my notes.

@Doug Powers You are right Doug. Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s great wine bargains. Can’t remember exactly but now with a heritage of over 50 vintages.
