Chateau Montelena — Chardonnay 2023 Napa Valley, California, USA 🇺🇸
Overview Released as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris, this vintage continues the legacy that forever changed the perception of California wine. Crafted in Montelena’s unmistakable style, it favors precision, freshness, and restraint over richness, proving Napa Chardonnay can be both powerful and elegant.
Aromas & Flavors Lemon curd, baked pear, crisp apple, citrus blossom, and subtle white peach are beautifully intertwined with delicate hints of wet stone, light vanilla, and restrained oak.
Mouthfeel Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and exceptional balance. Rich enough to satisfy yet remarkably focused, the palate delivers silky texture, impressive tension, and a long, refined finish that never feels heavy.
Verdict A benchmark New World Chardonnay that continues to set the standard nearly five decades after its historic triumph. Complex, poised, and beautifully balanced, it is a wine that appeals equally to classic California Chardonnay lovers and those who typically favor more restrained Old World expressions.
Did You Know? The 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the white wine category at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, defeating France’s finest Burgundies in a blind tasting and forever changing the reputation of California wine on the world stage. The 2023 vintage celebrates the 50th anniversary of that landmark event.
🍷 Personal Pick I’m generally selective with Napa Chardonnay, often preferring leaner, mineral-driven styles. Chateau Montelena remains one of my rare exceptions. It captures the generosity of Napa’s sunshine while preserving freshness, finesse, and impeccable balance. This is a permanent fixture in my cellar and one of the few New World Chardonnays I’d confidently pour for someone who believes they don’t enjoy Napa Chardonnay. — a month ago
Elegant black fruit aromas. Silky smooth blackberries, black currant, mint, and leather. Much better than the Wolff cab. This was also purchased at the Total Wine VIP event. — 6 years ago
Zoom event with Drew Bledsoe and Josh McDaniels. Vertical from ‘07, ‘14, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, ‘17 estate, and ‘18. All were exceptionally smooth and silky with good depth of fruit. Notes on the ‘17: 87% CS, 7% Merlot, 6% petite Verdot. Tobacco and raspberry on the nose, blackberry, raspberry and oak on the plate with a long fruity finish. The least earthy of the bunch tonight. Still young, will benefit from additional age. — 5 years ago
The last of the 2002 in mags brought from the property. Delicious. I would have thought these would have been saved for their member parties. So, a nice surprise.

WNH NY, 2021. The crew gifted me this gem for a major life-event birthday. Love it. Such a nice touch. I’m humbled. In the best place of my life ♥️ — 5 years ago
The sheer opulence of this is astounding. Obviously young, this was actually my first Realm BTK courtesy of @Keith Fisher . When thinking back to the last stunning 2016 BTK I had (MacDonald), where the MacDonald is more dusty, slightly more herbal and full of tightly coiled BTK power, this was an embarrassment of rich dark fruits, baking spices and sporting a creme de cassis like profile. Classic To Kalon power, with so much to unpack. Thank you, Keith! — 7 years ago
@Bryan Kesting : It was, but it was so much more flavor packed at pop and pour than I expected. If you’ve got multiple, open one to enjoy as an experiment. But if you’ve only got one, definitely hold for at least 5yrs.
@Joshua Fisher : It was fantastic! Wonderful stops and great weather. I’ll be popping the Brasswood chard you gave me tomorrow night for a monthly wine group I’m in. Theme is Chardonnay.
