Peter Lehmann

The Barossan Shiraz 2015

Clear deep ruby in color. On the nose, it's clean with pronounced primary and secondary aromas of charred wood, black pepper, and black currant. On the palate, it's dry, with high acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, full body, and pronounced primary and secondary flavors of eucalyptus, plum, leather, black cardamom, and tabacco smoke with a medium finish. This wine is complex, but a little lacking in fruit to balance the tannins. I'm hoping it opens up with time in the glass. Overall, I would rate this wine as good. It may be past its prime. After decanting and leaving it in the fridge for 3 days, it has opened up and is showing more fruit. The tannins have also calmed down. I'm bumping it up a few more points. — 10 months ago

Very tasty red. Lots of fruit, but not too heavy. Perfect with a Sunday lunch — 5 years ago

VSV Blesing Shiraz 2012

From Peter Lehmann’s VSV Series (Very Special Vineyard). Aromas of Plum Chocolate and Aniseed/Liquorice. Balanced French Oak. The palate is medium to full bodied - with those same descriptors from the nose coming through. Very Barossa from a good vintage. Rich fluid smooth tannins. Medium plus intensity. Only 500 cases made. — 6 years ago

Mentor Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2006

Brief notes. I’ve never rated Cabernet from the Barossa as high as Cab from other SA areas like Coonawarra or McLaren Vale but this Mentor was very good. Very dark in colour with leafy black currant notes. Matured for 18 months in French oak hogsheads the influence from which has been totally absorbed/resolved. Perfect balance. See previous note from February 2020. — 3 years ago

Mount Mary

Quintet Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2006

A rich crimson red in colour. Cassis , bay leaf mulberry and notes of violets. On the palate black currant, restrained yet sweetish - see notes from a year ago in March 2020. Sam Middleton, part owner and winemaker likes to drink Quintets between 10 and 15 years of age although I have had much older examples from friend and longtime Mount Mary collector, Dr Peter Sklavos. One of Australia’s classiest Cabernets. Not as minty as Coonawarra or as herbal as Margaret River. Commemorates the passing of founder, Dr John Middleton in 2006 as on the label. — 5 years ago

Margaret Limited Release Barossa Sémillon 2012

Very delicate, nearly feeble.
Creamier than a Hunter one, but just whispering its lanolin, meringue like scent and flavor.
Mineral far finish.
Still very enjoyable

The Pastor's Son Barossa Shiraz 2015

The final wine at the Peter Lehmann dinner at the Downs Club and the whole point of the dinner. Delectable: this new cuvée is called the Masterson and is a Barossa Valley Shiraz. Wine Pricing in Australia has become an arms race and this new Cuvée has set the benchmark at $1650 for a magnum - only available in magnum. This was sourced from a vineyard in the Moppa sub district of the Barossa owned by Glen Hammerling from vines planted in 1992 on original rootstocks, dry grown in deep sandy loam with ironstone over clay. The wine itself is an exercise in restraint. Matured in a large 2500 litre fourdre imparting minimal oak influence. You could happily drink this wine now or cellar for over 30 years. It is so well balanced. A brilliant wine but is it worth $1650? I think the pricing is too ambitious but the owner of Peter Lehmann, John Casella, the owner of export star, Yellow Tail, probably doesn’t care as he continues to make money from his budget line. 1458 magnums created and only 1000 released for purchase. — 7 years ago

@Severn Goodwin Thanks Severn. This is 2015 - the inaugural vintage. The plan is to not necessarily use the same vineyard each year. The strength of the Lehmann business model was Peter’s relationships with the growers who he stood by in good times and bad. In recent times there has been the VSV Line (Very Special Vineyard)

Spectacular stuff, fruit concentrate can justify the heat. Shiraz grapes provide voluptuous purple and black fruit, the fortifying agent is quality as well. — 5 years ago

Told @Lee Lightfoot this but I had this next to 83 Graham’s and this squashed it. Beautiful and still full of life: light up a coheiba and enjoy. It’s unbelievable how this has aged and I wouldn’t hesitate to let it rest another 10 years but basically nobody has it other than me and lee. Pm if you’ve tried it...

Peter Lehmann Cabernet Sauvignon Mentor 2011

It shows complexity on the nose, savory and gamey, but still full of dark fruits, herbs and spices. Silky tannins, hard to tell it is a 8 years wine. Lack of complexity on the palate, juicy and attractive. May develop complexity after further aging. Barossa Cab is under evaluated comparing to its Shiraz — 6 years ago
