Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay 2018

The smoke hasn’t cleared on this battle worn soldier. Really strong sense of gun powder! Volatilize, and peeks of lime pith or lemon verbena squeeze through the cracks like light in your lashes, revealing pepper and pecan shell, black mushroom spores and elm, with cigar sweetness and black lime on a smoky battlefield. Palate is lime pith and zest and oil and candied lime sparkles floating down a lemon juice river, with thick, thick lemon pith banks. Kind of a gangly age here, but showing depth and intensity. Need to see this one when it matures, sculpted like an Olympian.

Domaine de l'Espigouette (Bernard Latour)

Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2017

When I lived in Houston in the aughts, I drank a few fragrant Cotes Du Rhônes from this estate, so I was eager to try their Giggie, even though I’ve grown tired of Southern Rhônes as the climate has warmed and Phillipe Cambie seemingly put a spell over the majority of producers. Well, this is a bit better than the typical blocky, heavy wines that seem increasingly prevalent there. It’s densely colored (of course), but the nose has a bit more elegance and nuance than the typical Gigondas estate these days, showing fresh dark berry fruit, really interesting almost chaparral-like garrigue/earth notes, warm stones, and meadowy wildflowers. In the mouth it’s dense, but a little lighter than the new norm thank goodness, with nice savory flavors and decent acids. Tannins are soft. It won’t make me forget Giggies from the early ‘80s, but it’s nice. — 5 years ago

Restores one’s faith in White Burgundy. Glorious. Vibrant acidity, lovely citrus/apple/stone/custard flavors that developed beautifully over and hour plus. The last sip was the best one. — 6 years ago

Very nice aged red burg. Subtle and delicate. Had it with cast iron sausage lasagna, and it didn’t qnite hold up. Better with something lighter. Showed much better on day 2. — 4 years ago

Beautiful garnet color. Smokey, musty, and earthy on the nose. Cedar, black raspberries, leather, and tobacco. Well integrated and not overpowering. Very satisfying finish. A real treat to drink a 40-year old wine that is so pleasing to smell, look at, and taste. — 4 years ago

Long Shadows Vintners

Pirouette Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2006

A really funky nose that left you wondering what was in the bottle. And then, like a mist that lifts from the river - the tastes and nose showed up. A Phillipe Melka version of Washington’s best grapes. Power Bordeaux blend with Syrah added in. Soft tannins and subtle fruit kept flowing in and out. Wonderful comparison to an 06 Oakville Cab. — 7 years ago
