You know, when I coravin’d this last night, I thought the tannins were pretty strong and dominant. Today, I opened this up and coravin’d 2016 napa cabs from hunnicutt and quivet for a blind flight. Surprisingly, I thought this was very accessible and tasting the best currently. The quivet was the softest and also drinking nice. It tasted like a mike smith wine but less fruit forward than the majority of his wines. The hunnicutt was pretty powerful and I think needs some time or decanting. Tasted side by side with the 15 Becklyn NV and the 15 Quivet NV.

Super dark purplish red. Tight I start in the nose but then opened up with cassis, blackberries and sweet spices. Medium plus (7.5/10) and rounded full body. Dark fruits on the palate with sweet spices, brown sugar, blueberries, aniseed and crushed gravel. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2027. (92+) — 8 years ago

First vintage where i prefer myriad, quivet, and becklyn over the scarlett. Not big tannins so probably not an ager but it’s tight on opening that gives a sense of thinness. Double decanted it back in the bottle and it has more viscosity. Tastes pretty good now — 7 years ago

While this is so good and what a way to reintroduce myself back to red wines - amazing - we had to fight off wine zombies at our local high end burger joint as they saw our faces and knew the wine was speaking no screaming to us “I don’t like it, I LOVE it” as my friend @David L says but we escaped with our lives and enjoyed our wine

We kept drinking listening to Bon Jovi Wanted Dead or Alive while our horses got hydrated (well 500 horses in HP) as we did as well drinking this brilliant example of Cabernet Sauvignon from my new great friends @Mike Smith and Leah Smith - thank you so much - I praise you as I love this as much as one of top fives which is Quivet LPV 2013 which we discussed as well when we were together - this is different and Rhonda says it has a strong hint of vanilla beans that makes the scent unique and pleasant - I doubt she is right

The music changes to Dave Matthews and we taste to wine and man does the palette get pleased and finessed like a sexy women talking to me which I am lucky as that is my wife

The length of the taste is like watching your breathe on a cold day as Stone Temple Pilots plays on the speaker and really enjoying this masterpiece of wine craftsmanship / bravo Mike

My first of these, purchased on release. I really like this. Purple and red berries with a streak of minerality and a hint of dried mint leaf in the finish. Terrific companion to grilled pork tenderloin drizzled with aged balsamic. — 11 years ago

2016 mike smith flight

This becklyn is tasting the best right now. Soft, rich fruit, chocolate. Delicious. The quivet, despite being the least fruit forward of the 4, is also hitting the spot. It’s a good wine to open when you are sharing with people that have a more classic cab taste. The myriad napa is the most tannic of the 4, but it is dark and jam packed with power. It’ll be phenomenal with some air or age. Probably the most potential. The scarlett is the reddest fruit of the 4. Like the myriad, I think it will really shine with some air/age. After 3 hrs decant this was peaking. Huge sweet fruit and spice on the nose at opening but this turns into something special. Full body, opulent, neverending dark fruit, and medium + finish. This and the quivet napa are amazing cabs for 60 bucks and under. 94/95pts — 10 years ago

Dark red. Fruit forward nose with creme de cassis and green peppers. Dryer than the 2007 Quivet Spring Mountain District Cabernet. Moderate tannins and body that are well integrated. Finish lingers and is drinking great right now. 10 years has done well for this wine. — 11 years ago
