Pepper, strawberries, red licorice on the nose. Vanilla, plum, and citrus on the taste. Paired nicely with charcuterie and dark chocolate. I bought, I think if I cellar the other for another year or two, it would be great. — 3 months ago

Delicious Prisoner Friction viognier from the monthly club. Drank both bottles by myself at separate times of course! — a month ago

Second time tasting this 2018 bottling. Four years on, the 2018 Headlock has softened and found better harmony. The once dense core has relaxed, with plum, blackberry compote, and blueberry giving way to dark cherry, cocoa, and gentle smoke. The flamboyant Prisoner richness remains, but tannins are more polished and the sweet spice better integrated. Acidity also softens but still has enough to lift the palate. A lot to like here.

It seems all the 2018 reviews are from a couple years ago, and I bet they'd go up a point or 2 if they were drinking it now in 2026. This wine is very good, and I think the Syrah is helping it shine at 8 years of age. Nice dark cherries, plums, a touch of spice. Well balanced. I'm not a big fan of The Prisoner, but I'm a fan of this.

Unshackled 2023. Nose; pepper, cherry. Taste: cherry, leather. I really enjoyed this Cabernet Sauvignon and a great deal for the price. — 3 months ago

The Prisoner Red Blend
Napa Valley, California – USA 🇺🇸
Overview
The Prisoner is one of Napa Valley’s most recognizable modern red blends, known for its bold, fruit-forward style and unmistakable label. The blend composition typically includes Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono, though percentages can vary slightly by vintage. The high 15.5% ABV makes it very warm and rich profile easy noticeable.
Aromas & Flavors
Ripe blackberry jam, blueberry compote, black cherry liqueur, mocha, vanilla, sweet baking spice, and toasted oak dominate immediately. The wine leans heavily into dark fruit concentration and richness with a noticeable sweet-fruited impression despite technically being dry.
Mouthfeel
Full-bodied, plush, dense, and mouth-coating with elevated alcohol warmth. Smooth tannins and creamy textures make it approachable for many consumers, though for palates preferring freshness, structure, and restraint, it can feel a bit oversized or overly fruit-driven.
Food Pairings
Best with BBQ ribs, smoked brisket, burgers, spicy sausages, or rich comfort foods that can absorb the wine’s intensity and alcohol level.
Verdict
A very modern Napa-style powerhouse blend designed for impact and immediate appeal. You can absolutely understand why so many people love it, bold fruit, richness, softness, and instant gratification, but for more terroir-driven or tension-focused palates, it may come across as a bit too ripe and stylistically exaggerated after a glass for myself.
🍷 Did You Know?
The Prisoner helped popularize the modern “luxury red blend” category in California and became massively influential in pushing bold, high-alcohol, fruit-forward blends into mainstream wine culture during the 2000s. — 2 days ago
