Oak prominent initially on bouquet. Later it shows more on nose than palate. A rich medium to full bodied palate - one of the richest 100% Temperanillos I have had. (Known as Tinto Fino in Ribeira del Duero). Good core of fruit and oak even at 10 years but I would argue the oak masks the characters of the Temperanillo grape to an extent but certainly makes an attractive Red aimed at Western palates. Alion is one of the rising stars of the Ribeira following the success of Vega Sicilia. Fine grained if not firmish tannins but softening at this age. Never seen this in Australia. I bought this in New York in 2013. One of the 1001 Wines.

Opening a bottle of “modern” Ribera del Duero was an absolute joy. The color was a glistening dark Ruby red with concentrated aromas of dark fruits, floral scents and some oak spice. The palate shows sweet blackberries, plums and hints of black raspberry with gentle oak coming through. Tannins were very soft, good balance with acidity, medium to full body. The finish ends smooth with some woody spice, tobacco, smoke and minerality. Outstanding! It was even better sharing this gift from my son, with him!

Unlike many, many other RdD the precision and elegance, with power and structure on display here is impeccable. The house style from the grand daddy Unico is apparent. This is a wine to savor, linger on and appreciate over hours. The complexity complicates a bouquet and palate that are fresh and soulful. #spain #ribera #alion #vegasicilia
