Opened prior to dinner; enjoyed over several hours. The 1998 pours a deep garnet/purple with an opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with mixed brambles, black pepper, just a hint of animale, Kalamata olive, purple flowers, dried green herbs, and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Delicious and doesn’t seem to be dropping from a cliff soon. Drink now through 2033

Purple tawny color, almost opaque. Notes of red and black fruit, earth/dirt, stone, ash and some cedar wood. Next to the 75 Haut Brion beside it, the noses are ironically similar - with only the color of the wines being a good distinguishing factor. Got better and better with air... at hour 5, this was at its peak performance. Overall, a good but not great Cornas.

Dark tawny. Mostly opaque. Quiet nose. Modest notes of black fruit, some iron, some pepper. Lacking the punch you want. Tasted over several hours and never shed it’s quiet nature. Drink up.

Red scarlet, bright and clear. Not showing much age yet in the glass. Mineral and bright fruit nose. Notes of black cherry, slate stone, black earthy soil, raspberries and a little menthol. Even with two hours of air in a decanter this is young and chewy in the mouth. Lots of structure and acidity that overpowers the fruit. I’m curious to see where this goes in the next 5 years.

Dark scarlet center with clear rims. Almost opaque. Wonderful fragrant nose. Notes of blue fruit, earth, violets, minerals, and some menthol. Meaty. Velvet glove in the mouth. Soft rich fruit with a nice balance of acidity that prolongs the finish. Was open for business immediately. RIP Mr Clape and thank you for this.

1998 Clape Cornas. I believe the most aged Clape I've ever had. Soft, steemy, and a mind boggle for Syrah.
