Opened prior to dinner and enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1997 La Mouline pours a deep ruby/purple color with a slightly hazy, near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated black and red fruits: mixed brambles, black cherry, spiced meat, olives, purple flowers, black pepper, dried herbs, rocky earth, a mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Powerful and modern. Lots of energy left. Drink now through 2042.

Beautifully expressive, high toned, a little developed but still showing some great intensity, will be great for the next 10yrs.

Tired wine that probably had loads more potential just a few years ago. Starting to become muted

Had this next to a great new bottle of wine, up and coming producer, No Limit Syrah from Edna Valley. No Limit beat this out on the nose, as this La Mouline was a bit shy. Still much more appreciation has been acquired through the years on these La La's, and not because or RP or the price. These are worth the money, you just need to know what you're in for. That being said, great presence in the mouth, even after these years. Fantastic consistent color profile, and the amazing amount of umami styled eart component to go 'round. I wish I had more of this. Would have preferred the bottle for full analysis, but a fun few ounce tastes nonetheless.

Faded medium garnet with broad auburn rim. Smoke, cedar, meat, black olive, blackberry pie. Medium heat (13%), medium minus acid, medium astringency into long finish. Dark fruit and a little oxidation in mouth. Maybe too old as acid deficient, better without food. Kim thinks corked
