Tenuta di Sesta
Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, Italy

This is a classic example of the warmth of the 2015 vintage in Tuscany. Earthy nose shows dark, ripe plummy fruit, warm terra cotta roof tiles, gravelly earth. Soft and dark-toned in the mouth. The fruit is still there but tertiary notes abound. Tannins plentiful but very soft. At its peak (to my taste).

Brunello is one of my wife’s favorite wines, so she was pretty excited when this press sample showed up last week. Wonderfully silky with that powdery tannic grip that Sangiovese can offer, this is a classic old-school expression of Brunello - with gorgeous cherry, sandalwood, dried herbs and floral high notes. Fantastic acidity brings a dried orange peel quality to the finish and keeps the wine quite fresh as those dried herb notes soar for quite some time.

The wine shows a medium ruby tint in the glass. The nose gives off aromas of black cherry and licorice, plum and tobacco. It is as complex as one might imagine for a wine which spent two and a half years in oak. On the palate, there is red fruit along with some savory notes of earth and oak spice. The tannins are supple and the acidity is refreshing. This is a wine to pair with a special steak or game dish.

Did I just pop and pour a brunello? This is my first 2015, and this is easily the earliest I have found a brunello drinkable. On the nose: pure black raspberry, sage, sage bark, soft blood orange..lovely mix of fruit and savory characteristics. On the palate: so approachable; good soft rose, blackberry, wild strawberry balsamic notes...excellent acidity, fantastic density, and sandalwood...nicely structured finish, but not at all over-the-top tannin-wise. Very yummy.
