California Chardonnay 2022

Dark gold in color.

Strong nose and full bodied with medium acidity.

Dry and fruit forward on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing oak, citrus, yellow apples, melons, pears and spices.

Tangy finish with lemons and limes.

This easy drinking Chardonnay from California is oaky and tangy. The alcohol is nicely integrated so watch out.

I had this vintage before, and it is drinking better now. Will not get better from this point on, so drink up.

Good by itself as a sipping wine.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$35.

Tonel 10 Baga 2020

Very fresh wild herbs & just picked red fruits on the nose. Wild raspberries & currants on palate, resolutely medium to medium light bodied. Low tannins yet nicely chewy. Dig the no label/only a hanging tag aesthetic. Very enjoyable, shared with friends at local restaurant/ wine bar, which had this for under 50- always a sight to behold — 4 years ago

Provvido Terre Siciliane Rosso Nero d'Avola 2016

Who doesn’t judge a book by its cover? The faux Olivetti typewriter font crowding the label screamed Bea and our aesthetic judgment was correct. The acolytes have done the master proud, this is wild: great tannins, a big blueberry note, pepper, leather, fennel, fabulous nose. Really in a great spot right now after 2 hr decant. — 6 years ago

Rheinhessen Riesling 2016

Thought this would be a aesthetic wine , all face no flavor but it’s actually good quality. Mid dry with some tartness , great balance of acidity and some peachy fruitiness to it . Great for conversation wine or friendly gift . The cat cork and bottle is cute bonus . Worth the $12 if you fancy aesthetics and flavor . — 8 years ago

Pearl Morissette Estate Winery

Jeunes Vignes Creek Shores Pinot Noir

I had this by the glass a few weeks ago and was disappointed but giving a second try out of the bottle has changed my opinion quite a bit. We decanted it for 30 minutes, mostly for aesthetic quality (why the heck not?) so maybe that had a bit to do with the overall taste. Such a truly beautiful translucent ruby colour - like stained glass. A bit o' tannin I was surprised by. Could definitely offer a LOT for diverse food pairings (I know, you're welcome for that insight about Pinot noir....) Young vines really showing in a fun way. Classic P-Morissette does Burgundian style. Cranberry, red purple flowers, black tea leaves, NICE potting soil (not the stuff you can get at dollarama). Would recommend to a friend. Oh also I drank this out of a brandy glass because #myparents . — 9 years ago

Loved this! Not a campfire wine, per se, but definitely great for a garden party with a fire pit. Which I imagine is much more in line with the Frasier aesthetic you're all trying to cultivate. — 9 years ago

Pairing with When Harry Met Sally because a) it describes young Sally's aesthetic and b) it has very specific and complicated secondary fermentation details. Sexy texture--those amphorae can werk — 10 years ago

Chappellet

Molly Chappellet Fifty Years On Pritchard Hill Napa Valley Chenin Blanc 2024

Chappellet – Signature Chenin Blanc – 2024 🇺🇸
Pritchard Hill, Napa Valley AVA – California, USA

Overview
An exceptional and expressive Chenin Blanc from the iconic slopes of Pritchard Hill. Crafted by winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus, this small-production white showcases the precision and elegance that Chappellet is known for.
Molly Chappellet’s signature featured on the label, along with the distinct bottle silhouette, reflects her refined aesthetic and the wine’s singular personality.

Aromas & Flavors
A vibrant aromatic spectrum: lemon, fresh pineapple, nectarine, and tropical white flowers. Subtle French-oak influence reveals whispers of nutmeg, vanilla, and lightly toasted spice without overshadowing the fruit purity.

Mouthfeel
Bright and lively with toned acidity that keeps the wine energetic. Layers of citrus, lychee, and stone fruit unfold across the palate, finishing with candied lemon zest, mineral lift, and a refreshing, persistent length.

Food Pairings
Perfect with grilled halibut, lemon-herb chicken, shrimp scampi, soft goat cheese, or spring vegetable risotto. Its acidity and texture make it incredibly versatile at the table.

Verdict
A stunning, beautifully composed Chenin Blanc that highlights Napa Valley’s ability to produce world-class whites beyond Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Elegant, complex, and irresistibly fresh, a wine that captivates from first aroma to final sip.

Did You Know?
Chenin Blanc was once widely planted in Napa Valley in the 1960s–70s. Chappellet is one of the rare estates preserving and elevating this noble Loire variety on premium hillside terroir.

🍷 Personal Pick Highlight
A uniquely compelling white that impressed me from the first whiff, polished, aromatic, and brimming with personality. One of the most memorable Chenin Blanc expressions coming out of California today. Cheers!

From back label. Located on a high-elevation, steep glacial terrace in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago. This stunning site has clay and pedogenic lime soil, featuring schist and quartz.
A traditional aesthetic - respectful, patient, vineyard- focused- resonates in our approach, and frees the wine to express the unique tenor of our sites.

This wine was fermented using only indigenous ‘ wild’ yeast and matured for 17 months in French oak barrels. This wine was bottled unfiltered on 10th of November 2016. Careful cellaring will reward collectors over the next 10+ years. 1046 cases were made.

Pelago Marche Rosso Merlot Blend 2009

Gallow Green is a gorgeous rooftop restaurant on top of the venue that hosts Sleep No More and several music and variety acts. As with these attractions, the aesthetic is on point. The salads are tasty if tiny. The pizzas are delicious and taste like they are hiding a wood fired oven round the back somewhere.

$25 corkage is a good thing too.

The wine I brought along has black fruit, supple tannins, tar and leather. It more than held up to the pizzas and, like the food, disappeared very quickly.

Jacques Puffeney

Cuvée du Jubilé Arbois Poulsard Trousseau 2014

How do I even begin to comment on the privilege of lapping up the last drops of a life's work? Puffeney's 52nd vintage, his final potion. The wine that made me aware of the Jura, that first sparked sensation of time and place, a wine that exists equally in bottle as it does in brain. When you find yourself paused mid-step on the walk home, paralyzed by the distant sound of a youthful pianist stretching their hands across blessed white and black keys. Recognizing the tension that folds over their shoulders in tandem with the all encompassing lightness of body that accompanies practice. There is something so real about the way they are playing, without too much fluidity, they stop and start again and somehow that's better than an unstopping song. There is no performance here. What is it about the walls, windows and air between you that deliver these wafts of sound in such a pleasurable way? How does the space aid the aesthetic? You keep standing there, basking in this auditory coat, and for a sliver of time you want nothing. You want no one. You have everything. This pianist will never meet you, nor you them, yet there is partnership, a unity, an offer and reception. An electrical circuit you have both worked to complete. You want to cling tightly to this moment and you find yourself searching for evidence to make you present. The sky was blue, the pavement was wet, I was just about there, I was happy. But all of this is already phrased in the past tense, the moment has already slid away from you. You pick up your forgotten step and continue forward, dizzy from experience, left with only a stamp in your mind that you can picture but never fully revisit. Little death. — 9 years ago

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Le Cigare Volant Red Rhone Blend 2008

I'm admittedly a sucker for Randall's wines, and his writing, and his aesthetic, his quirky personality and outlandish experimentation. The 2008 is rich, dense, littered with ashy tannins and ripe with black, juicy fruit. So, my husband proposed after our first visit to Bonny Doon, thus my bias, but I think I can truthfully say this wine is very, very special. — 10 years ago

The Royal Tokaji Wine Company

Furmint 2019

Light golden yellow, excellent clarity. Floral and honey nose, spicy and dry in mouth with white flower flavor. Long mineral finish. Mouthfeel (viscosity) on the heavy side, but reasonably good acidity. A different aesthetic going on here so give it a chance. 50/50 barrel and tank fermented. 13% alc/vol. The back label claims there’s peach flavor in there, but you’ll need to wait an hour for it to emerge, and it’s a faint underripe peach note, at least initially. — 3 years ago

Anakota

Helena Dakota Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

The Polo Bar might be the most "sceney" restaurant in New York. The walls are adorned by hundreds of paintings of horses, wood paneling and leather is everywhere. The aesthetic is utterly on point and on brand.

We drank this fabulous Sonoma mountain Cab from Anakota. Deep, dark, quite dense, highly structured and with an intensity of fruit that gives the impression that this will be very long lived. Suffice to say it was perfect with the well executed, uncomplicated American fare (New York Strip Steak for me).

Kutch Wines

Falstaff Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

California or Burgundy?!? Crazy complex and interesting aromatics full of green herbs and garden with spices with a mouth full of red fruit on a full but pillowy texture. Way more going on the second day. This is a wine where I get the "ethereal" description given to some Chambolle and Vosne wines. Beautiful and aesthetic....would go higher but not sure if I like the forward herbaceous nose. Very very similar to Dujac and Montille — 9 years ago
