Day 3 in Napa in the books! Running a day behind on notes...Napa time runs slow AND fast!

Loved our visit here. Gorgeous property & wines. Bigger style SB with explosive stone fruit & tropical fruit aromatics. Not quite as round and rich as Aesthete or Arkenstone, but very similar. Nice acidity with pronounced notes of honeyed passion fruit & white peach.

Well dang. I got this on recommendation of @David L , @Carl Fischer , @Mike R , @Ron R and a few others. I am SO glad I did, especially after hearing that my favorite SB, Arkenstone, is moving to $95/bottle! To me, this tastes like Arkenstone on day 2. It is chock full of pineapple juice, cantaloupe, kiwi and stone fruits. Reminds me of the ice cream bar Creamsicle in how creamy it is. There is a tartness with the fruit but also balanced acidity. It is powerful and bold. Truly fantastic for those who enjoy bigger style SB. As you can see in the background, @Mark Flesher enjoyed it! — 7 years ago

@Greg Ballington It was really cool. It really feels like a departure from Napa, or at least Napa today. And the wines match that feel.

Montagu Wines

Las Francas Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2015

My love and affinity of Montagu is well documented on here, so no need for me to keep lavishing praise. That being said, if you enjoy bigger style SBs (Bevan, Arkenstone, etc), you need to try this. This has gotten SIGNIFICANTLY better over the last 6 months. "Sauv Blanc done the hard way" says Weston (winemaker) due to the oak aging here. I'm holding on to some of these to see how they age out. Right now though, it burst out of the glass with such force that you wonder if this is really a SB. So much tropical fruit and citrus, peaches, red/orange fleshy fruits. Acidity is perfect...chalkiness note up front and the finish is lengthy. Could even benefit from a quick decant...if you can resist drinking it! — 9 years ago

For an SB you can tell this one is thick, full bodied. Oak influence in this wine is apparent. Initially a lot of lemon rind and citrus notes with sharp acidity. Almost makes the lips pucker from the very start. Great weight. The wine thins out a bit in the middle and I was almost trying to envision how this one would taste alongside a key lime pie or lemon and herb chicken. This SB can stand alone without a doubt. I agree with Shay about decanting, as this one did seem more intricate with almost an herb and limestone note that started to come in to play after a few hours of breathing at home. I would definitely say this one could hold 3 or 4 years without a doubt.

Special wine. They are pulling fruit from below Arkenstone off Howell. Has everything Howell like in spades. It is dusty with chocolate, full of flavor from red, blue & black fruits, but has a special “mint” like Andes candy mint finish.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend 2007

Caitlin's graduation - wine #3 of the night. My first Amarone--why haven't I tried these yet? Holy cow I'm a fan. This was a close second for me. Vibrant fruits, silky tannins, just full bodied enough, nice long finish. Will buy this again. Stood up extremely well next to the reigning champ, the #Arkenstone — 8 years ago

Wednesday Wine Committee. As always, wines are tasted blind. 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert.

Not a lot to say on this that hasn’t been said. One of the top SBs coming out of Cali year end and year out. Melka and Arkenstone are in an echelon alone in my opinion, followed by Addax, Bevan, Montagu, and this. Bold style SB. Not overly tart or acidic. Mineral notes and beautiful texture. I guessed high end Cali SB. ✔️

Amici Cellars

Spring Mountain District Sauvignon Blanc 2016

My understanding is the ‘16 vintage of this is their last one as the SauvBlanc grapes have been ripped out as more Cab is being planted. Such a shame. This is a superb SB, one of the better ones I’ve had and reminiscent of another Mountain SB I’m fond of, Arkenstone. Everything about this is just rich and round. Guava, white peach skin and lemon tart bar aromatics. More viscous than most SBs on the palate showing limestone, pineapple and a Creamsicle like finish. Very white Bordeaux like and could hold for a few years. — 7 years ago

Day 2 of Napa in the books!

Quick lunch with my friend Jason Moore of Modus Operandi Cellars. He was Weston’s (of Montagu Wines) mentor and is a fellow Texan! He submitted his wines for review for the very first time last year after 10+yrs, and received multiple 92-97pt wines. This SB is so much better than expected...tropical and explosive. Not quite on Arkenstone or Aesthete SB level, but the richness and round texture are very similar. Kiwi, stone fruit, nectarine and a melon/cantaloupe finish. If you enjoy big style SB, not sure there is a better Napa Valley one at $40.

Accendo Cellars

Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2015

This ranks among my favorite SBs (Bevan, Dana, Arkenstone). SB with a touch of Semillon (I didn't know this when I first tasted the wine - but commented that it reminded me of a white Bordeaux which makes sense now). Lime, honey, wet stones and pith on the nose, this wine is rich on the palate thanks to time in Oak barrels, yet maintains a nice crispness. Mouthwatering acidity and moderately long finish. I really like this wine. — 9 years ago
