Frei Gigante

Vinho Branco White Blend 2021

When in the Azores drink… lovely Azorean whites, especially from Pico. Like w many Portuguese whites ( & reds), a blend- of what, I don’t know ( probably Verdelho). Salty, volcanic, & some serious yellow fruits. Bought in local supermarket for about 18$. Paired w local Sao Jorge cheese, local cured ham, & artisanal sesame crackers. Damn. — a year ago

Vulcânico Rosé Blend 2013

Salmon color, lower acidity for a rosé, citrus and strawberry notes, more body but still very refreshing with the low 11.5% ABV. More elegant, no funk, no wow, but very nice and easy to drink. — 6 years ago

Do Pico Ancient Grape Vinho Branco 2016

A lovely souvenir from the Azores. Crisp but plenty of body. Think vermintino with saline and warm fruit. — 7 years ago

A Cerca dos Frades

Colheita Selecionada DOP-Pico White Blend

Brilliant white wine from Pico island in the Azores.

Cerca dos Frades Verdelho by Paulo Machado speaks to the terroir of this UNESCO World Heritage Site in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. It’s salty and honied with bursts of grapefruit acidity. The wine is made with the Verdelho grape and partially aged in old French oak, adding a roundness and complexity.

Adega Dos Ferreiros

Forjador Branco

This wine is from a tiny family farm on Terceira island in the Azores. They provide about 1000l per year. It is clearly an island wine with all the usual minerality that you expect from a wine from the azores but it is a bit more complex than most. The beautiful golden color is achieved by oxidation for a few hours before bottling the wine. As far as I know, this wine is only available on the island and even here only in very few places. So I recommend getting it if you have the chance. Also visit the vinery if you can. The family is super nice and they have plenty more things to try out. — 2 years ago

Very cool and unique wine, nice to try it again. Pears, lemons, oyster shell, crushed rocks on the nose. Beautiful salinity on the palate. A little short and one dimensional but great@expression of terroir. reminds me of a Chablis. — 4 years ago

António Macanita Arinto dos Açores

Volcanic Verdelho do Pico (different from the Portuguese mainland Verdelho, also known as Godello in Spain) from vineyards located on 3 different islands - Pico, Graciosa and S. Miguel- in the Azores archipelago. Virtually at sea level and unusually close to the Ocean, vines grow on very poor volcanic basalt soils, surrounded by traditional stone-walled “currais” to protect them from the extreme Atlantic winds. Salty and mineral. Thirst-quenching acidity. Passion fruit. 🌋 🌋 — 7 years ago
