Château de Saint-Cosme

Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2020

First bottle from a case of the 2020 Gigondas village from Ch. de Saint Cosme. It could even be my first time trying Gigondas from Louis Barruol, 14th-gen winemaker here, though I do recall a memorable St Joseph from my birth year that I enjoyed around ten years ago.

This wine is strawberry pink in colour, with good clarity. The nose is shy on the first night, better second; very pretty, with fairly light aromas of blackberry, candied cherry, liquorice, wild herbs, and a hint of grilled meat.

The palate is beautifully polished, striking effortless balance between structure and clarity, sweet fruit and acidity; the tannins are mild and it has wonderful grace through the finish, like a ballroom dancer gliding across the floor. Overall this is a really pure, fresh and elegant expression of Gigondas and has none of the rusticity for which this old appellation is oft known. In fact, it bears greater similarity to old-vine Grenache from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is no bad thing. Also zero trace of heat despite the 15% abv. Very good stuff from Louis Barruol. This will age with Burgundian grace. Can’t wait to try it again – make sure to decant.

Hart Winery

Driveway Limited Release Red Blend 2019

Hart is no more, I think they’re the last of the 1st gen of Temecula family wineries to go. I will miss their wines which I felt were alays best in the valley. This one named for the field blend of grapes growing along their driveway and behind the winery bldg was a joy showing they had a sense of humor — 3 years ago

Luca Wines

Laborde Double Select Uco Valley Syrah 2015

Had another bottle, Wow! Laura Catena, 4th gen winemaker, grew up in Argentine-Italian winemaking family in Mendoza. Wines, named after her children - Luca, Dante & Nicola - background of the label is the McDermott coat of arms of her American husband, Daniel McDermott. Single-vineyard wine from land belonging to the Laborde family. Deep red with big ripe fruits & smoky oak. Palate plum & jammy blackberry, spice with nice earthy character. Tannins are a bit rustic, lingering ending with toasty oak & spice. — 7 years ago

Ji Ji Ji Tunuyán Chenin Blanc 2021

9.3

one of the more impressive wines i've had from ARG - deep dark golden color, looked slightly oxidized, and a bouquet that vacillated from honeyed florals, to mineral, to exotic perfumed spice, musky, brooding, ripe citrus then orchard fruit - just so multi-layered & oh so engaging, the palate was a bit more focused - solid mid weight w/firm acidic backbone leading to lingering tangy salty finish. can't recall having a Chenin like this - felt like extended skin contact and long lees treatment. — 5 months ago

Las Alturas Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2021

‘Las Alturas' Spanish for 'the heights', a fitting name, this vineyard located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. 4th gen Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner from family with farming & winemaking roots in Napa since 1906. Met Joe several times. Deep Ruby (darkest Pinot I have come across). Nice berry and floral spice aromas. Rich cherry/plum flavors with oak, spice and vanilla. Long finish, bold ending with sweet oak notes. Very Nice! A Fav! — 2 years ago

Ancestral California Red Blend 2015

9.5

Wow, this is a huge, spicy, smoky delicious red blend. Gen5 nailed it! Tremendous fruit, smoky peppery nose and wonderfully balanced with a touch of acid and tannins. Tasted it against the Cupcake Black Forest Decadent red, which is very good, but had the misfortune of being tasted with the Gen5. — 8 years ago

Gramercy Cellars

Lower East Southern Blend Red Rhone Blend 2019

This is a delightful oddball- Bread dough, barnyard, currents, plum skin. It's leaning towards that 'natural' wine character but luckily it doesn't cross the line for me.
Good texture - nice balance in the mouth between silky lacto acid and soft tannins.
Good wine to serve to your crunchy Gen X friends while you can still enjoy it.
Edit: this opened up with more ripe fruit on the second day

Pax Mahle Wines

Walker Vine Hill Syrah 2007

1st gen Pax is big and hot. Surprisingly fresh nose though wife said cherry cordial. Huge fruit, dulled by age into raisin, mocha, molasses, beef jerky, campfire. The fruit might age further into deeper tertiary. Air brought out a whiff of herbs, a taste the modern Pax profile. Tannins are there but mild. — 8 years ago
