Impressions Meuniers d'Exception Champagne Blend

Jérôme Lefevre, Elaine Delalot’s son, falls into the category of noninterventionist; at least by Champagne’s standards. No pesticides. No weeding. No tilling. The dude doesn’t even prune. “Impressions” comes from a single small vineyard in Charly-sur-Marne called “Les Boulards”, planted exclusively to Meunier. The soils in Les Boulards are largely sand! The wine is aged in new, medium+ toasted, 300L barrels. The results are stunning.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. “Impressions” pours a slightly bronzed color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of bright tropical fruits, raspberries, citrus, some varnish, and minerals. Natural. Soulful. Stunning. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is creamy. A totally “wow” wine and one of the more singular Champagnes I’ve had since my visit with Clément Perseval last fall. Disgorged November 2023. Long acids. Very good. Bought from a great little wine shop in Petworth in the South Downs here in the UK, just after having a fantastic lunch at a spot called E. Street Bar & Grill which is a terrible name for an absolutely exemplary little bistro with great seafood and wine. And with the perfect slightly surly but extremely accommodating and professional French maitre d. Anyway, if you happen to pass through check it out. — 3 years ago

La Closerie Les Béguines Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Meunier

Last bottle from the 2008 vintage

Relatively low on pressure when uncorking. Small tight bubbles

👅This is rich with citrus, nuts, and bread. This has some smokiness and it is oxidative. There is nice acidity that remains noticeable through the finish. Finishes with a bitter quinine note and extra brut dryness

This is persistent and drinking well but I preferred this when it was fresher, crisper, and had some florality

Nice wine🥂🍇

Cuvée Apogée Extra Brut Meunier Blend

Definitely like the Pouillote bottling better for about 10 USD less. This was 100 percent Munier, and a higher vineyard it seems. Pouillote was 80, with 20 Chardonnay. — 5 years ago

La Closerie Les Beguines Climax Extra Brut Pinot Meunier 2012

Man oh man. This is a whole other level of Champagne. It is of outrageous intensity and expression. There is incredible power, vigor and drive in this wine, showing such depth in its material, clearly built to age. A gentle decant unleashes it’s complex and layered core of caramelized orchard fruit, gingerbread and smokey minerals. As the bubbles reduce with extended aeration, it takes on a whole other face, performing like a Montrachet with age. An exceptional and singular Champagne that we should all be so lucky to try. A mere 20 bottles or so make it to the US. — 5 years ago

La Closerie Extra Brut Pinot Meunier

I think this is the best release of this wine I’ve had. LC22. It’s excellent tonight layered with ripe orchard fruit, gun smoke, salted hazelnuts and exotic spices. The palate is structured and concentrated with a satiny texture and vibrant energy giving way to a saline and mineral laced finale. Delicious! — 8 months ago

Simply stunning…Master of Meunière! Hard to posit something better. Absurdly good seafood…bubbles were better. 60 second finish… pure gold in the glass. — 3 years ago

Extra Brut Grand Cru Champagne Pinot Meunier

Disgorged in 2021, this new and ultra rare bottling from Prévost has debuted with the LC19 release comprised from grapes purchased “from sources that emphasize cultivated soils, low yields and full ripeness.” The base wine is a blend of equal parts Chardonnay from Le Mesnil and Pinot Noir from Puisieulx, at the northern end of the Montagne de Reims. Then, there is 20% reserve wine from 2018. While of course very young, it shows incredible depth and complexity today, and quite Burgundian and to no surprise, vinous in its expression. It flaunts a deep caramelized stone fruited profile with salted hazelnuts, curry leaf, gun smoke and lavender. The full bodied and satiny textured palate is just riveting with energy and it gives way to a mineral and saline driven finish that goes on and on. Wowza. — 4 years ago

Les Crayères du Levant Brut Nature Meunier 2015

With the Rosé having been a total stunner a few weeks back from this Meunier specialist, I was excited to try this BdN given my adoration for Jérôme Prevost. It certainly did not disappoint! 100% Meunier, with a mere 579 bottles produced. It’s incredibly energetic with an ultra precise palate and impeccable concentration. A gentle decant brings out its layered and complex core of caramelized apples, mandarin oranges, jasmine flowers and smokey minerals. A touch of oxidative expression adds to complexity. Very exciting stuff. — 5 years ago

Interesting. Would love to try a bottle. How does it compare to Egly-Ouriet’s PM offering, or Prevosts’ La Closerie?

@Lee Pitofsky : Good to know. Definitely my preference between the two (although EO’s Les Crayeres is an all time favorite).

Black cherry, smoke, graphite, spice. Nice acidity. Full style of Burgundy. Not overly complex, but highly enjoyable.
