Love Child No. 8 Sour Ale

Bottled on 17 Feb 2017.

Nose has yeasty stone fruits, Bing cherry, plum, fruit juice saturated oak, yellow raisin and fresh lemon+lime peel.

Palate has medium sourness, black cherry, ripe plum, ripe nectarine, red wine vinegar, medium funk, minimal oak influence.

Very nice stuff here.

A delicious example of an old vine Pinot Blanc from Alsace. Bursting with fresh apricots and searing minerality, the intense nutmeg and baking spices dance across freshly baked apples. A savory note peeks out like a shy child from grilled peaches, while white flowers are throughout. An excellent example of aromatic whites from the region. |sample

***Clocking in at 11% abv, this sweet rose` wine is dangerous due to how delicious it is, thus making it impossible to stop at just one glass. Another PA wine win for this gal. Even my friend who adamantly claimed she hated all types of wine ended up falling hard for this wine. I was able to locate this wine in a select few PA Wine & Spirits stores in my stomping grounds in the southern metro area of PGH. Check the PA Wine & Spirits website or phone app to check if it is in stock near you.

the 14 is odd and different than her other vintages but is changing in compelling and surprising ways - like a child that goes down strange and meandering paths only to travel themselves to a place where they flourish and become the genius that they were destined to be — 9 years ago

With a bit of age, it’s just a wonderful expression of the trio. Maria and Rich Thanksgiving beautiful floral nose still with the touch of creaminess overlaid with acidic minerality — 7 months ago

Azienda Agricola Valentini

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2010

The slightest bit of reduction that quickly blew off to reveal a beautiful nose of florals, peach and honey. On the palate it makes its presence known but tiptoeing not stomping. Wonderful concentration that reveals layers of fruit and herbs. At this stage I would call it a precocious child. — 7 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

It's Friday, and it is time for my Friday's Cabernet fix. This time it's a Napa Valley Cab.

Beautiful color of dark ruby with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, cherries, sweet raspberries, wood, vanilla, smoke, coke, chocolates, coffee, earth, mint, spices, metals and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with plums, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, wood, earth, vanilla, licorice, vegetables, vinaigrette, acetone, alcohol, peppercorn, leather, tobacco, coffee and dark chocolates.

Nice length on the finish with medium tannins and tart cherries.

This is a nice Napa Cabernet. Fruity with mild complexity, but not fully balanced yet. A little tart on the ending for my taste. Needs a couple of years in the bottle to mature.

This Californian Bordeaux blend needs a couple of hours to open up properly and show some tannins.

Enjoyable by itself or with food like BBQ steak. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

James Suckling 92 points.

A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Aged for 20 months in French oak barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Château Golan

Royal Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

It's Friday, and it is time for my Friday's Cabernet fix. This week it's a fabulous Israeli Cab.

Dark ruby in color with a brick rim.

Great fruity nose with black currants, blackberries, figs, smoke, licorice, oak, vanilla, sweet cherries, earth, wild flowers, graphite and black pepper.

Full bodied and smooth, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and spicy on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet raspberries, cherries, dried figs, tobacco, spices, wood, licorice, peppercorn, earth, dark chocolates and espresso.

Long finish with round tannins, tangy cranberries and spices.

This is a great Cabernet from Israel. Well balanced with great complexity. Smooth and elegant already, and will get better with more time in the bottle. Showing a great mouthfeel, a spicy finish, and it still has enough acidity to make it interesting.

Needs 90 minutes to open up properly and show some tannins and complexity.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Nose: Smokey in a sexy wild child way. Almost savory. As this opens this gorgeous freshly pulverized sweet minerals. Wow.

Palate. Rich. Great yellow apple fruit. Popping acidity. Terrific. Sweet minerals.

The COVID vintage. More time spent in the vineyards than ever. Nothing else to do.

Estate Scallop Shelf Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2016

Will take exception to Antonio’s suggestion that this is the shy middle child - this opened up beautifully on day two into the same cherry, pomegranate, rose petal, and mint nose that Antonio got from Ama, with zest and mouthwatering acidity but no sharpness. Tannins are soft and the palate adds a touch of barley sugar. This will definitely come out of its shell, if given time. — 8 years ago

That review is the harshest 92 I’ve ever seen! If you “blinded” me on Antonio’s review without showing me the score, I’d say 81.

Casto Oaks

Gardner Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Time for my Friday's Cabernet fix. I got a bottle before release and labeling from Casto Oaks Winery- here it is.

Dark ruby in color with a purplish/reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, black currants, cherries, cedar, leather, earth, vanilla, licorice, spices, mint, cola, tobacco, dark chocolates, light vegetables, pencil lead, alcohol and peppercorn.

Full bodied and bold with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, sweet cherries, black currants, cedar, earth, vanilla, leather, spices, bitter herbs, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf and peppercorn.

Long finish with angular tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a wonderful cabernet from California. Not fully balanced yet with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.

Needs 3 years to mature and balance itself out. Hugh grippy tannins are still overwhelming, which I actually liked.

Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up (45 minutes). Delicious.

This Single Vineyard was aged in American oak barrels for 15 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.

Fruity nose blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, eucalyptus, chocolates, spices, pencil lead, black pepper, leather, earth and metals.

Full bodied and rich, with medium acidity and nice legs

Dry on the palate and fruity, with blackberries, sweet cherries, black currants, oak, vanilla, licorice, earth, tobacco, pencil lead, peppercorn, leather, smoke, chocolates and mocha.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a great Cabernet from Napa Valley. Well balanced and enjoyable by itself or with food.
Showing nice complexity and mouthfeel.

Needs an hour to open up properly, but good right out of the bottle and good for parties.

Drinking nicely now and will be good in the next few years.

I paired it with beef tenterloin.

14.8% alcohol by volume.

Love Child No. 5 Sour Ale

Oceanic agar suspends a muted, pickled peach and matches with fruit bat guano, pine chips, coffee, cardamom and white pepper aromas. Underripe bing cherries, toasty apricot, clove, scorched lemon, blood orange, underripe tangerine, grapefruit and kumquat: a particularly sour, yellow one. Decidedly different than the one I had last year; better perhaps! #boulevardbrewing #sourale #sourbeer #sourbeers #lovechild #numberfive #dankbeer — 9 years ago
