"Les Evocelles" Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 1er Cru 2017

Brought this to date night at La Crem; excellent G-C, nose is superb, palate is restrained rather than explosive; started to seem a bit wooden later in the opening. Paired best with the Dover sole course — a year ago

From a half bottle. Popped and poured; no formal notes. Persistent mousse. Lovely notes of white peach, pear, brioche and chalky minerals. Super well balanced. Gimonnet rarely disappoints. A multi-vintage blend from 2010-2019. Disgorged May 31, 2021. Dosage 6 g/L. — 4 years ago

Special Club Grands Terroirs de Chardonnay 2014

These Pierre Gimonnet champagnes are always of the highest quality from the Côte des Blancs and with terrific prices. An original member of the Club Trésors de Champagne, the Special Club, and an easy buy, each and every time.

The color of starlight on a cloudless night. A surplus of tiny bubbles and persistent perlage throughout. A very clean and focused nose showcasing lemon peel, pears, and sea salt. Vanilla custard and pronounced smoke. Hazelnuts and freshly baked dough with a nice dose of spice. Apples of the green and red varieties.

Some love has to be shown to the labels. Classy metal front label and an ultra informative back label. Pure Chardonnay from the Grand Crus of Cramant (59%) and Chouilly (25%) with the rest coming from the Premier Cru terroir of Cuis. The acidity here is outrageous and highly focused, really beautiful. Very pure and creamy. Disgorged in December of 2019 with an Extra Brut dosage of 4 g/l.

Everything carries over to the palate. A very complex and harmonious champagne. Fresh and bold with more apples and spice. Strong minerality and yeast here. Long, enduring finish. This definitely lives up to the standards of Gimonnet and the Special Club. Don’t sleep on these 14’s, they’re alive and kicking.

Terroirs A Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs

Pop and pour. A bit under a year since my last btl. May 2016 lot, Aug 2019 disg. 5 g/L dosage. On the nose: lemon, baked apple with a touch of butter. On the palate: soft mousse, lovely meyer lemon and apple. Fantastic density and acidity. Crisp, yet good weight. Still young, but very yummy. — 4 years ago

Moussé Fils

Effusion Rosé Champagne Blend

One of my favorite rosés, and producers, year in and year out. Definitely rises above the so many other bottles of champagne that it can be compared to. And, it’s exceedingly pretty.

A light salmon pink color in the class. Nice persistent bubbles and effervescence. Strawberries upfront on the nose but there’s this kick of cinnamon that’s just so delightful. Some light brioche notes with cloves and dried herbs to compliment. Earth and cherries really start to express themselves after plenty of time in the glass. Such an intense, singular nose.

Cedric Moussé makes a spectacular range of champagnes but this one has a special spot in my heart. It’s just so unique and fun. 92/8 Pinot Meunier/Pinot Noir from two separate perpetual reserves and disgorged in July of 2020 with the low dosage of 1.5 g/l. Medium bodied but weighty and substantial.

Cherries and cream explode on the palate. Vivacious red fruit but so far away from being a standard issue fruit bomb rosé champagne. Nice minerality and subtle notes of herbs and earth. Long finish with an uptick of cream and acid. Mesmerizing and beautiful. One of my favorites for a reason.

Close out G-C?!? Don’t mind if I do. Great concentration and depth of flavor here. Lots of currant, plum, and bruised cherry. 14 months in oak (30% new). Solid villages that doesn’t sport a nosebleed valuation. — 3 years ago

L'or D'Eugene Brut Blanc de Noirs

Again it’s a champagne from Cédric Moussé, one of the Masters of Meunier. He’s almost single-handedly put Cuisles on the wine map. The L’Or D’Eugéne is a perfect introduction to his style.

Medium gold with fast paced perlage and an attractive bouquet. Black cherries and pretty flowers combine with chalk and herbs. In the mouth, it’s racy and vivacious. Sexy and a bit thrilling with zippy acidity. 80/20 Pinot Meunier/Pinot Noir from a perpetual reserve with an Extra Brut dosage of 2 g/l.

I’ve always wanted to drink this over a few days. To really let it breathe and mature in the glass. To really let it set and enjoy it over time. But I can’t. It’s just too damn good.

Cuisles Special Club Champagne Pinot Meunier 2012

Pale lemon in the glass with very active perlage initially. The nose is tremendous with apple butter and fresh baked bread smeared with honey. Green apples and cherries abound along with fresh herbs.

Pure Meunier from the village of Cuisles. These Moussé champagnes are always a distinct treat and easily some of the best on the market. Plus acidity and major plus on the character. Really nice tension and drama here. Dry with much finesse, 4 g/l dosage and disgorged in mid 2016.

Electric on the tongue, this is just coursing energy. Lively and bold, this is a very pure wine with terrific length. A nice bit of citrus on the palate with more apples coming to play. Captivating stuff. As ever.

Brut Réserve Champagne Blend

A striking rose gold color in the glass; I don't recall this catching my attention so much on all prior bottles!

Nose has oxidized pear, orange zest and fresh brioche.

Palate has tart tangerine, lemon pith, white grapefruit and under-ripe raspberry. Great acidity but balanced creamy notes.

Disgorged January 2021; Dosage 7 G/L; 2018 base vintage.

Always a must-buy wine, fantastic value.

@Shay A For sure! This is a Champagne that really started us done the road to many other great bottles a couple decades ago, the first to open our eyes to what was out there... This is the youngest version I've had, and a rare 750, as almost all prior have been 1500, but those are becoming increasingly hard to find.

Cuvée Maxime Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay 2012

A light golden shade with a profusion of tiny bubbles. Green apples, pears, and grapefruit up front on the fun, fruity, and fresh nose. The citrus aromas take over with a little orange rind and peach. Tea biscuits and just the barest hint of red cherries make an appearance. This is honestly one of those champagnes you never want to stop smelling.

All Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil sur Oger in the Côte des Blancs. Six years on lees with 8 g/l dosage. This is really nice with a sturdy, acidic backbone and just the right amount of floral attributes. Classy is the word I would use to describe this beauty. It most certainly over delivers for the price. And I have to mention the bottle, it’s spectacular.

The palate displays roasted nuts and more toast. Beautifully pure fruit here with lemon rinds, grapefruit, and tangerine. A splash of strawberry and cherry goes a long way here. The stone minerality takes the cake. Medium long finish with spice and more yeast. This is magnificent now but can wait a few more years.
