Moulds Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Deep, dark, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon. Needs steak. Prune, dark bitter chocolate, blackberry. As dark as it gets. — 2 months ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

My experience is limited with these wines, but I’ve been fortunate to try a few older vintages (‘10 and ‘12), and absolutely love the videos Roy sends out periodically. Last time he gave an update on the 2014 was late last year (I think?) and recommended an 8hr slow ox. I double decanted this for about 4hrs, then consumed from the bottle over the next 2hrs.

Moulds & GIII vineyards. Deep red/black in the glass, almost purple. Aromatics of ripe mixed berry pie, dark currant, dark chocolate black cherries, and some Christmas spice here. Downright gorgeous on the palate…silky, commanding, rich yet still vibrant. Decadent dark red and black fruits, graphite, sweet espresso and extremely fine grain tannins on the finish. With proper air, this is really delicious.

Erna Schein Moulds Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

From the damned vintage comes another good wine. Is this as full-bodied as the 09 or 10? No. Notes on this wine are black cherry, rhubarb, mint on the nose and just about the same on the entry. Gains a floral note in the middle. Finishes with black cherry and white flowers. Rounded character but acidity is quite present. Tannin are a bit sweet, slightly astringent but doesn't really take away from this wine. If anything it adds a bit of mystery. This was a Coravin glass and a half today, with the remainder likely going down tomorrow. I'd say this is probably just about the time to start drinking on these if you have a few. — 6 years ago

Limited Production Dakota Shy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Dark fruit, herbs and cocoa on the nose. Incredible tastes of dark cherries, chocolate, baking spices, and graphite on the palate. A silky smooth mouth feel despite being a young wine. Tannins are rich and sleek and the acidity is perfectly integrated. A really good wine from an up and coming winery in Napa. — 9 years ago

The Visitor Napa Valley Red Blend 2013

Shay A
9.2

The Visitor is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Moulds Family Vineyard in Oak Knoll; 34% Lagrein from the Blossom Creek Vineyard in Calistoga and 16% Petit Verdot from the Kidd Ranch Vineyard in St. Helena. Made only one time (2013).

I didn’t even know Lagrein existed in Napa. Last I had that varietal, it was from Alto Adige. Deep purple in the glass (thanks petit Verdot). Blackberries, boysenberry, mocha, dark cocoa aromatics with dark floral/potpourri too. Blind, I would have guessed this had a good bit of Malbec…so much juicy/fresh squeezed and slightly tart black/red berry fruit, almost jam/compote like, alongside forest floor, and high percentage dark chocolate. Shocking amount of tannin, even after being open for almost 5hrs. Best at cellar temp. I’d say open now to enjoy as I’m not sure it gets better in regards to fruit presence.

Mirror

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Sourced from the Moulds Vineyard & Stagecoach Vineyards, the 2016 Mirror Cabernet Sauvignon opens with cassis and red bell pepper tones, with flinty and smoky accents that entice. The palate has good freshness and verve, with a lovely viscosity. Blackberry cobbler, mocha and creme de cassis flavors all marvelously come together alongside the vibrant mineral backbone. Outstanding in its youth, this beautiful wine will cellar well for the next two decades. Drink 2020-2035- 92 — 6 years ago
