Le Secret des Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2012

What I dream about when I dream about wine. Perfect. Leather and tannins and earth and depth. Drinking at its peak now. The nose is sensational and hits as soon as the bottle is opened. The fruit is complex and dark with some bitterness. Worth its $90 price tag. — a month ago

Clos du Mont-Olivet

Seraphin Côtes du Rhône Red Rhone Blend 2014

Clos du Mont-Oliver 2014 Côtes-du-Rhône | 13.5% | Mellow red fruits ranging from tender raspberries to sliced strawberries combine with a fragrant expression of the garrigue we yearn to find on quality Côtes-du-Rhône but in this case less the sapid rosemary and resinous herbs and more the scrub roses and lavender bound for Gras. 60% Syrah for its subtle but certain depth and structure, this blend also includes 40% Grenache for all its fragrance and fruit. The Famille Sabon who are the Stewards of Clos du Mont-Olivet tell us the “vineyard is located north of Bollene at the boundary between the Vaucluse and Drôme Provençale. The Syrah forming the basis for this wine are grown on the locality "Montueil" –slightly elevated and surrounded by trees, ideal conditions for they are not overripe. The tank is filled by gravity with 60% of the grapes whole cluster on the stems. The work of the wine is made without seeking maximum extraction to further emphasize the elegance and freshness. Breeding begins in enamel tanks to preserve freshness and after malolactic fermentation, the wine is placed in barrels.”

Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

Aromas of kirsch, dried cherry, old wood, leather, and warm spice lead into a broad, supple palate. The fruit is ripe and generous, with earthy undertones and hints of black olive and dried herbs. Structure comes more from fine tannins than visible acidity, giving a smooth, gently weighted flow rather than lift. The finish is savory and persistent, marked by a candied touch.

A nice traditional CdP, but it does not show the fruit purity and freshness that’s one of the hallmark of the great 16’ vintage.

Zehe pick Tasting notes: The Sabon family ages this Reserve bottling in large barrels known as foudres. With flavors of black pepper, coffee, strawberry, raspberry, fresh herbs and a grainy palate, this is an old school Côtes du Rhône. Our main course wine with Kentucky Bourbon chicken skewers, Rosemary potatoes in smoked olive oil with snap peas & green beans straight out of garden.

The nose reveals, ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, blue fruit heaven, slightly stewed plums, creamy, black raspberries, strawberries on the high nose and glass edges. Sweet tarriness, anise to black licorice, dry stones, crushed, dry rocks, medium, dark spice, savory, grilled meats, underbrush, limestone & sandstone minerals, steeped tea with beautiful florals of dark red, blue and violets.

The body is round, lush and medium full. The tannins are rounded & well resolved with baby teeth. The structure, tension, length and balance are somewhere around the top of the bell curve with another five years of life ahead. It’s gorgeous as it slides over the palate. Ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, blue fruit heaven, slightly stewed plums, creamy, black raspberries, raspberries & strawberries. Mid red cola, sweet tarriness, anise to black licorice, dry stones, crushed, dry rocks, medium, dark spice with just a touch of heat, savory, smoked, grilled meats, dry tobacco, well worn, softened leather, underbrush, limestone & sandstone minerals, steeped tea with beautiful florals fields of dark, red, blue, violets and soft lavender. The acidity is like a warm, river palate dip. The ripe, juicy, elegant, well balanced finish is delicious and persists a few minutes with excellent florals on the long set.
