We had the 2019 Block 48 on 3/4-5/23. This is a fruit forward, medium bodied wine. Light garnet in color. Black cherry and plum on the bouquet. Black cherry, strawberry and baking spice on the palate. A velvety mouth feel. A long finish. We bought this at the tasting room in Carmel. — 3 years ago

On my second trip to Alsace, we stumbled upon this winery by accident. A cancellation by Barmes Buecher gave us the opportunity to take a cold and sleepy drive up through Bergheim and in to Rorschwihr where we were welcomed by quite the views and wines. One of the bottles I brought home.

Known for producing wines that are at peak (almost late) maturity, all wines have plenty of fruit and off-dry profiles (ideally picking right before botrytis sets in), and all wines are released when deemed ready (as this 2015 was, as well as a 2003 Pinot Blanc).

It’s not common to see 100% auxerrois as it’s normally blended with Pinot Blanc, as adds a touch more body and honey. Mission achieved here. Deep golden color. Lovely aromatics of spiced pears and honeyed tropical fruits. Maturity and sweetness are balanced on the palate with so much fresh honey yet not cloying or stepping in to dessert wine territory. Not a lesson is complexity, but certainly a lesson in how some of these grape that are normally consumed early can age properly.

Followed over three days and experienced a consistent profile. The residual sugar will certainly help carry this a while. No rush. — 5 months ago

We had the 2012 Vintage on 9/24-25/21. This is a full bodied, well balanced Pinot Noir. The bouquet is wonderful with black fruit and cardomom. The palate has bing cherry, wild strawberry, oak and even a little vanilla. A very good wine. — 5 years ago

The 2022 Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard is a richer, more forward style of Chardonnay. A lovely hug of spicy French oak wraps around a sweet, ripe pear fruit core. Textural intensity is the order of the day—this wine spent much of its maturation period on the lees, which softened its edges in a really pleasant fashion. A forgivable tick of heat emerges on the finish, but this is attractive enough to look past that. (Billy Norris, Vinous, August 2024)

2019 The Optimist from Sanguis. A blend of Syrah, Cab Franc, Viognier and Roussanne, When you are seeking something different. This is Sine Qua Non for those of us waiting patiently on the list. This is the Artazu Pasos de San Martin Navarra, a varietal Garnacha. A bit sleepy before it gets air, it gradually Benjamin Buttons and develops a terrifically pure nose of kirsch and raspberry ooze, along with crushed rock dust and sandalwood. In the mouth it’s got intense fruit, but is laser-focused and has excellent acids. Zero flab.
Just enough tannin to package it all. Really nice rendition of Grenache. — 4 years ago
