Orange bitters in sour boullion, with a honey recess carved into the funky sweet potato and snap pea. Less sweet than 5: less brown sugar. This has an ethereal citrus that borders grapefruit and pickled apricots spin in an eddy of complex depth below. Amazingly tight for a 16-year old wine. The acids are smell-able on the nose, zinging along tart, macerated wild cherry fruit and glacier-crushed rock fragments. (OK, maybe I’m making up the part about how the crushed rocks were created.) In the mouth it’s deep but the acids rip this along on the palate like a whitewater canoe ride. Gorgeous deep color. Nose is all smoky minerals and nose-tingling acids. Lean and intense. Like Hercules squeezed juice out of the freaking rocks. Some nice dark berry fruit is swept along on a whitewater raft of minerals and acidity. A totally unique style. Looking forward to see how this is tomorrow. I suspect I might bump up the score.

NIGHT 2: Much friendlier. Nose shows a very perfumey violet component, along with more fruit. Softer, with more fruit to complement the minerality in the mouth. Bumping it from 8.8 to 9.0. Very very nice. — 11 years ago
