The Chocolate Block Cinsault Blend
Franschhoek Valley, Coastal Region, Western Cape, South Africa
The 2019 Chocolate Block underwent whole-berry ferment in concrete and stainless steel. It has a lifted bouquet of mint-tinged blackberry and raspberry fruit plus light licorice notes. The palate is grippy on the entry. A spicy and peppery Chocolate Block with just a little reduction toward the finish, which feels a little drier than usual (though a second bottle showed more flesh). (Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2021)

On the palate this is surprisingly light, juicy & lively. The cinsault really comes into play. Fruity, funky, with light tannins & juicy acidity. Fresh, crunchy fruit, a touch of bubblegum character, a herby note towards the finish.
So drinkable, and a lovely wine. Though might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Very soft and ripe red fruit (amarena cherry, raspberry). Also thyme and rosemary,. Broth and a whiff of black pepper. The sweet and sour balance is nearly perfect.

Funny how the chocolate really comes forward in a deep dark blue fruit syrah/cinsault blend. Dark not enough complex.
