Tenuta dell'Ornellaia — Le Volte dell’Ornellaia Toscana Rosso 2022 — Toscana IGT, Tuscany. Italy 🇮🇹
Overview:
An easygoing, “uncork-and-pour” Toscana IGT Rosso built on a Bordeaux-style blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. Rather than a Sangiovese-driven Tuscan profile, the 2022 leans clearly toward Bolgheri polish — darker fruit, softer tannins, and a smoother, more international expression designed for early enjoyment.
Aromas & Flavors:
Blackberry, black cherry, plum, light pepper spice, cocoa, and subtle savory herbs.
Mouthfeel:
Medium-bodied with supple, textured tannins and a juicy, fruit-forward core. After 20–30 minutes of air, the wine rounds out nicely, showing softer red fruits and a smoother, polished finish. Aging in previously used barriques and concrete keeps the structure gentle while preserving freshness.
Food Pairings:
Pasta al ragù, grilled sausages, pizza, roast chicken, bistecca, mushroom dishes, aged pecorino.
Personal Pick:
I originally expected more Sangiovese character, but the glass told a different story — this drinks closer to a baby Bolgheri/Bordeaux blend than a traditional Tuscan red. Once I adjusted expectations, it became a super enjoyable, relaxed, trattoria-style bottle that disappears fast at the table.
Verdict:
Bright, plush, and effortlessly drinkable. A polished everyday Super Tuscan that favors approachability over structure — perfect for casual meals and immediate pleasure.
🍷 Did You Know?:
Le Volte’s blend composition can change by vintage; the 2022 release is entirely Bordeaux varieties with no Sangiovese, giving it a darker, softer, more international profile compared with more traditional Tuscan styles.
