Woodlands

Matthew Woodlands Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

At the Woodlands Dinner at Walters Steak House in Brisbane last Wednesday hosted by one of the family owners, Andrew Watson. The premium cuvée each year is named after Family members or friends. 2014 was “Matthew “. Drinking a 5 year old Cabernet of this quality from Magnum is akin to infanticide but one can see the undoubted potential there. Cellar for up to 20 years. Definitely one of the icon Cabs of Margaret River. A lovely blend of Cassis and Herbaceous notes. Medium to full bodied with a finish that goes on forever. Outstanding. — 7 years ago

Wow. Holy epic insanity of beauty. This is ridiculous. The nose is ridiculous. Incredible insane levels of Barolo like headspinning spice. Just unreal. Floral. Florals. An underlying element of the great Centrgrafenberg with an uncanny mineral aromatic expression that just penetrates. Fully mature Centrgrafenberg Pinot is a treat. Huge mint. Menthol. So deep. Just a drop dead nose. The palate is just unbelievable. So fresh, so balanced with terrific and elegant tannins that are thoroughly ripe and so so lithe and complex. The finish is like a cloud of cherries and minerality. This is an epiphany wine for me. I cannot believe how Walters age. Wow. Total wow. This is a brilliant bottle. — 8 years ago

Adler Fels

The Eagle Creek Pinot Noir 2014

Aldler Fels 2014 The Eagle Rock Pinot Noir, made by winemaker Aaron Bader, is a beauty. Bader calls the making of good Pinot is “both a physical and mental exercise.” He’s not shy about tooting his own bottle. “It's sexy, luscious, with that sweet perfume, a hint of maple syrup, and lush fruit.” Maple syrup? I can have that for breakfast!
For this wine, he blended three-quarters Sta. Rita Hills Pinot from Santa Barbara County and one-quarter grapes from the Russian River Valley.
The Pinot is hefty and dark, with a nose that exudes black raspberry, black olive, coffee, tea and anise. Maple syrup? Well, now that it's in my head, it's in my nose. On the palate, wow. Ripe fruit, those olives, black tea and black pepper. The savory angle continues into the finish and carries plenty of sweet oak spice with it.

Place of Changing Winds

Annus Horribilis Pinot Noir 2020

At a good French restaurant in Sydney - Franca Brasserie. Place of Changing Winds is the brainchild of Robert Walters, one of the leading importers of Fine Wine into Australia - IFW. This is his local venture based in the Macedon Ranges, to the immediate north of Melbourne. Specialising in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 2020 as a vintage is well described on the label as “Annus Horribilis”. Terrible weather including a freak frost meant only 100 dozen bottles were produced. As often happens in these difficult vintages the resulting wine was very good - pretty and perfumed yet structured and fine boned at the same time. Looking forward to trying more bottles from this ultra boutique winery. — 2 years ago

Normal service has been resumed.
In my opinion, this represents a benchmark in RRV chards.

HW Estate Grown Lodi Petite Sirah 2015

Deep purple in color with a short purplish rim.

Fruity nose with blackberries, blueberries, sweet plums, light earth, vanilla, licorice, eucalyptus, spices, tobacco, peppercorn, milk chocolates, vegetables, herbs and black pepper.

Full bodied, smooth and creamy, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, cherries, blueberries, wood, earth, vanilla, molasses, medium roast coffee, black pepper, spices, milk chocolates and cola.

Long finish with soft tannins, cherries and spices.

This is a delicious Petite Sirah from Lodi California. Well balanced and fruit forward with nice complexity. Showing a soft and smooth mouthfeel that I did not expect from a Petite Sirah at this age.

An easy drinking, bold and jammy red wine, with high alcohol, so watch out...

Better after 30 minutes in a decanter.

This is a good sipping wine, all by itself or with food. I paired it with Gouda cheese which went perfect together.

Grapes are hand-picked. Aged in American Oak barrels for 10 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$22.

2013 is a legendary vintage in the small village of Burgstadt and this is in the zone like no other walter. Age your Walters please. You will be rewarded. Nose is crazy spice. Like deep, enveloping spice. Brilliant cherry. Just a crazy crazy nose. So stanky and expressive. Wow the palate is just gorgeous. Juicy and so elegant. Floats. Perfect balance and stunning cherry fruit. Super long finish. Juicy, nimble and complex. — 4 years ago

First taste of 15 Walters! Vey exciting. What a youthful, packed and dense nose. Big, ripe red and black cherries and berries. Spice, flowers and a tiny berry fruit intensity. What a great nose. Whirling spices. Stunning. Palate is incredible. So juicy and concentrated with terrific acidity and a compelling sweetness. This is ridiculous. Gamey, meaty finish. Such delicacy and finesse. There is NO way this is that good. But my score is my score. Incredible. This is brilliant. — 7 years ago

Estate Grown Lodi Merlot 2016

Here is my #MerlotThursday for the week.

A very pretty color of dark ruby with a wide reddish/ brick rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, plums, cherries, peppercorn, oak, light vanilla, licorice, cloves, pencil lead, light vegetables and spices.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with plums, cherries, sweet raspberries, tobacco, spices, wood, vanilla, diet cola, cloves, dark coffee, dark chocolates, herbs, spices and peppercorn.

Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a very nice Merlot from Lodi, California. Balanced with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel. Tangy and spicy.

Good by itself or with food. Peking now and will be good in the next few years.

Needed an hour in the decanter to open up properly and balance itself out.

The Single Vineyard Merlot has high alcohol, but it is not noticeable, so watch out...

Grapes are hand picked, and aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

15.9% alcohol by volume.

89 points.
