Today I have opened the 2018 The Pey Family Textbook Cabernet Sauvignon. From Saint Helena, CA Napa Valley. This is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot. A nice surprise at this price point, well worth it.

On the nose there is black cherry, blackberry, plum sauce, vegetal notes, black currant, mint, spice, violets and earth.

On the palate I find black cherry, blackberry, black raspberry, black currant, green bell pepper, spice, mocha, pencil shavings and earth.

This wine is full bodied with a fresh vibrant mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium+ sandpaper tannins that leaves you with a long vegetal black fruit earthy finish. Deep dark garnet color. Nice dark cherry round fruit and depth here. Enough complexity with wood and earth. What a nice finish with firm long tannins that melt into a clean finish. Best merlot dominant wine I’ve had in a while. Had it with a NY strip at Capital Grille. — 7 years ago

2021/10/8 with roasted Challandes duck breast, foie gras in truffle sauce, bass with Mont Saint Michel mussels in beurre blanc, etc. Kaleidoscopic aromas of brambly red fruit, forest floor, stone and toasted spice.
