Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2013

Absolutely beautiful Margaret River Cullen Wine. Honestly. Underrated. — 3 months ago

Voyager Estate

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009

Aromatics of black fruits with a touch of menthol (eucalyptus in these parts). Not as herbaceous as the northern part of Margaret River up In Wilyabrup. Oak is noticeable on the palate initially (even at 16 years). One of the few Cab Merlot blends as their top Cuvée (Cullen is another) in preference to straight Cabernet Sauvignon. On the palate ripe black fruits and mulberry. Finishes with fine tannins. HH has a long drinking window on this, up to 2039 which I don’t think many will have the willpower to follow- including me. — a year ago

Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

See previous note from February 2023. A full bodied Margaret River Cabernet - cassis and herbs. This is really good. From the dress circle Wilyabrup area of northern Margaret river with neighbours like Moss Wood, Woodlands, Vasse Felix and Cullen etc. Barb said woody notes (not meaning oak influence). All the best Margaret River Cabernet attributes with the texture and mouthfeel of an excellent Barossa Shiraz. We both loved this wine. Have the last one in mid 2025. — 3 years ago

Juniper Estate

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

See previous notes from November 2020. Herbaceous is the word together with plum and blackberry - some earthiness with a note of mushroom. In summary - Herbal, Mineral, Bay leaf. Not the complete package like it’s more illustrious Wilyabrup neighbours like Woodlands, Moss Wood, Vasse Felix, Cullen etc but also half the price so good QPR. Tasted again 60 weeks later on 6th September 2022 with similar results A good wine that drinks to its price point. Not quite the standard of its illustrious neighbours. Not as much maritime influence? — 5 years ago

Can’t remember but it was a high quality and refined Pet Nat... berry fruit, low acidity, dry fruity finish

Amber Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Sav Blanc is not my favorite but this was pretty interesting. Brought this back from Mags River last year. Really like Cullen wines and this one paired well with sashimi and bad NFL bets. Tons of grapefruit and marmalade. — 6 years ago

Kevin John Margaret River Chardonnay 2022

Ming L
9.3

The gentle nose shows bright citrus, yellow peach, dried pear, and hint of crush nuts. On the palate it’s concentrated yet vibrant, with round acidity, spice and orange blossom, balanced by lively mineral drive and a long, lingering finish that meshes power with poise.

It’s bold and expressive, with a dynamic tension and savoury complexity that feels both immediate and age-worthy. At this young age, I like it better than the Art Series.

Fermoy Estate

Reserve Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

See quite a few previous Delectable notes. Interesting back story about Fermoy Estate being served at the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark to Sydney girl, Mary Donaldson. This is my last bottle. A deep dark crimson. A lovely nose of blackcurrant, eucalyptus and herbs. Palate of medium intensity showing those aromatics. A pretty good Margaret River Cabernet from the Wilyabrup district. Probably doesn’t get the credit it deserves being overshadowed by its more famous neighbours in Moss Wood, Woodlands, Vasse Felix and Cullen. — 2 years ago

Woodlands

Chloe Chardonnay 2012

See previous Delectable notes. Crystal clear pale lemon in colour. A lovely 10 year old Margaret River Chardonnay. Chloe is Woodlands premium Cru for Chardonnay. A funky nougat type note - lemons and nuts. Not as full as Leeuwin Art Series - more like near neighbours Cullen and Vasse Felix. This wine begs for seafood. Next night quite Citric. — 4 years ago

Gralyn Estate

Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Leafy, tomato bush aromas - herbal- classic Cabernet descriptors from Margaret River. A sweetish blackberry note on the palate but essentially savoury with a tarry earthy note. With time in Decanter this wine improved even more - a really good medium weight Marg River Cab. Gralyn is in Wilyabrup and has illustrious neighbours like Vasse Felix, Cullen, Woodlands, Moss Wood and Pierro without their reputation as yet. They recently made this a “Museum Release “ charging $500 which is over the top. I’m glad I paid $80 at the cellar door about 10 years ago. Used to be served in Qantas Business Class back in the day when Qantas was flying internationally ✈️✈️🛫🛫 — 6 years ago

Xanadu Wines

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Notes of Capsicum (red pepper), mulberry and leafy notes. A good entry level Cabernet from Xanadu. Medium bodied with all the characteristics of quality Margaret River Cabernet but a little detuned. Xanadu is one of the up and coming wineries in the west winning major trophies on the Show Circuit like Deep Woods Estate who are challenging the established Margaret River hierarchy like Moss Wood, Cullen, Woodlands, Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Leeuwin Estate etc etc. — 7 years ago

Fraser Gallop

Parterre Chardonnay 2018

I unwisely drank my collection too young. This was my last of 3 bottles. Some citric tang on the nose and palate. A touch of stone fruit with notes of nectarine. Certainly has the power and acid drive to go on into the 2030s. Excellent value. Neighbours of the big gun Chardonnays like Cullen Vasse Felix and Pierro without their price tags. — 10 months ago

@Bob McDonald, we had a very nice visit at Fraser Gallop in late 2023.

Vasse Felix

Tom Cullity Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2017

I had this lovely wine last Sunday night at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. This is the best Cabernet blend from Vasse Felix and is different from the other premium Cabernet blends in Margaret River because it has 17% old vine Malbec (originally planted by Dr. Tom Cullity himself in 1967 and are the original vines planted in Margaret River). Of course it was infanticide drinking this superb wine at only 7 years of age………but sometimes you have to do these things!! I swear I could detect the presence of the Malbec on the nose as it was so different from the other big name neighbours like Moss Wood, Woodlands and Cullen. A beautiful floral nose of roses and violets. I have been collecting the Tom Cullity since the first vintage in 2013 through to 2019 but for some reason never bought the 2017. This is the first Cullity we’ve had. Just waiting for my cellared examples to get some age. HH gave this wine 98 points and a drinking window of 2021 to 2041. — 2 years ago

Vanya Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

At my Cabernet tasting on the weekend. Thanks for bringing this gem Ken Gargett. This is Cullen’s top Cuvée - I had never tried before. One of those wines that is so balanced and medium bodied that you don’t think it will cellar whereas in reality it will cellar for 30 years. There was some lively discussion on this point at the table. Plum and dark cherry notes. A wonderful wine but a little expensive. Postscript: Only 261 bottles made. — 6 years ago

L.A.S. Vino

Wild Yeast Margaret River Chardonnay 2015

Pale to mid Lemon in colour. Barrel ferment characters, leesy funky, touches of butterscotch and stone fruit. Went through malolactic. Some would say “worked”. Needless to say a lot of good winemaking on show here. Palate is more citrussy than stone fruit with a balanced creaminess very persistent flavours. A lovely and well made Chardonnay by Nic Peterkin. His dad founded Pierro who make one of the best Chardonnays in Margaret River and therefore Australia. His mother, Shelley, is the daughter of Di and Kevin Cullen ie. Margaret River royalty. Only 200 cases made. — 6 years ago

@Bob McDonald Based on your previous note in 2017 it sounds like this has improved with age, that’s great.

Yes. I noticed that myself. It’s great when that happens. Sometimes it goes the other way and better off drinking younger.
