Private Cellar Falkenberg Vineyard Shiraz 2014

Personally brought it back from Australia. The very accommodating winery and their absolute wonderful staff accommodated a direct shipment to the city I was staying, free of charge. Deep dark tanniny liquid. Dark, dry layered fruit, with satisfying complexity and a finish that kept you wanting to drink more. A bit unbalanced kept it away from a higher score. — 7 years ago

Loibenberg Solist Riesling

BEtony sommelier Dean Fuerth poured this for us to accompany a squid dish. Softness, fruit, a bit of acidity. Perfect for drowning my sorrow at the news of the restaurant's imminent closing. — 10 years ago

Have a few more of these squirreled away, but opened for an old friend who used to buy a ton of Hewitson wines from me — this was nearly flawless, just a stunning presentation, best it’s shown — ever. — 9 months ago

Powerful wine that went well with my Georgian lamb. Too strong to drink alone. But perfect with steak or lamb. Powerful nose with strong brooding flavors. — 3 years ago

Chinon Cabernet Franc 2016

Yummy hay/mud aroma in the glass, tastes like a dry pinot noir at first. Opens up to a barely ripe cherry over time. Served by the lovely Dean. — 7 years ago

Riverain Vineyards

Cardiac Hill Bennett Valley Syrah

Riverain is Steve Nordhoff and Dean & Laurie Gray’s label that produces just a few hundred cases from some select vineyards in Northern California, including a Tench Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Gamble Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc.

According to Dean Gray, Riverain is a historically French term meaning “local & friendly people who reside near the river.”
@Greg Ballington deserves credit for the reco, and while I’ve had a handful of Syrahs from the Cardiac Hill Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Bennett Valley, this is my first that’s made by Thomas Rivers Brown.

Screams old world, particularly Northern Rhône. Loved it from the get-go, but the acceleration at 90 minutes open is significant. Campfire grilled meat, finely ground pepper, black olive, and creosote, with a core of savory black fruit, and a beautiful secondary combination of cedar and lavender. There’s a distinctive combination of balance, purity of fruit, and savory structure that’s hard not to recognize.

We ALWAYS love this stuff. Not exuberant like many Napa cabs. Fruit-forward , but not so sweet. Shows depth and restraint on the palette. Hats off to Dean Sylvester. — 9 years ago

@TheSkip and @Hugh O'Riordan, seek these out. The 10 vintage was also stellar, but the glass closure puts a capstone on it. We love this cos it's closer to a more traditional style, as opposed to the US contemporary style. At $50 or so, that is another reason to get after it!
