Lo-Fi

Santa Barbara County Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay 2023

LoFi Wines are the Kings of funk. Cool labels. Their tasting room in Los Alamos is fun with great music. Mega hit and miss when it comes to wines. Pear & apple more or less Ok. 13%. — 2 months ago

Dogged Vine Vineyard Mourvedre

This more specifically from the “Los Olivos District” nicely done Perhaps some whole cluster but with all the earthyness and spice you would expect from Mouvedre medium acidity - seems like a good home for this amazing variety — 4 years ago

This Is Your Brain on Hops Double IPA

Applesauce gold opacity, with marshmallow over-puff hovering like egg white. Kidney pie lacing turns lattice cobbler. Sweet warm nose of lemon pie, white grapefruit and nano-mint, lotus root, ramen, lime, and pink grapefruit. Palate is lemon perfection, round pith, creamy lime, crystalline grapefruit, white pepper textural impression, candied lemon peel, and a cubist apricot. Amazing, rich, variegated, layered complexities, ever changing, alpha!

Another cellar experiment of ours. This is showing very well at this stage in its evolution. A hazelnut, nutmeg, brine-like nose gives way to a medium bodied, full-throttle palate. Dense and opulent, this is fruit-forward with pineapples and nectarines. Excellent now, and will stay this way for at least another 3 years, easily.
I was discussing with my wife how I’ve decided to return to my moderate wine roots. I’ve grown weary of spending a “kings ransom” on bottles, and for what exactly?
Ultra expensive wines are becoming like fritterware software, which draws in people like us, with a very disproportionately low gain in tasting experience, relative to cost. This cost me $25 a few years back, and I’ve now decided to drink more frugally. Yes, I have a few “trophy” bottles to get thru, but I’m not wasting any more of my hard-earned on penis extensions.
What are your views in this space (and I don’t mean views on PE’s).

When I was in the wine biz I was always really excited to find a lower priced wine that over-delivered. Finding those gems makes our habit much more tolerable

@Daniel Bloom, thank you for those words. My intent is to inject a little levity into this lofty space that we have decided to occupy.

Unti Vineyards

Bianco del Campo 2021

A brilliant CalItal (yes, I said it) blend of Vermentino, Falanghina, Biancolella and Fiano from one of the kings of CalItal (Unti).

Fragrant (lemon ice, lemon verbena) and oh so refreshing (yellow flowers, fresh white melon). Delivers way more elegance and length than you’d expect from a simple porch wine.

Coup de Foudre

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018

Situated at top of Kings Ridge Road along Sonoma Coast, overlooks Pacific at 2000 feet elevation. Ruby with aromas of tangy red fruit aromas, floral and toasty oak spice notes. On the palate a rich full flavor of strawberry and black cherry with exotic spice, earthy oak and firm chalky tannins. Lively acidity gives the wine good balance and carries through the finish with fruit and earthy mineral character ending with subtle notes of cacao. Very Nice! — 5 years ago
