Pouring champagne is always special. Pouring Grand Siecle? Extra special! Each iteration is composed of three declared vintages and aged up to ten years on the lies. In this case, 06, 07, and 08; released 2023. The palate has a luxurious texture: lemon curd, white peach, fully integrated with toasted hazelnut. The finish is memorably graceful with chalk, salinity and some minerality. Cheers. — 2 years ago

A truly imperious champagne. Exceedingly beautiful in the glass with a crystalline pale gold color. The effervescence is effusive and almost emotional. Nice intensity on the nose with apricots and honeydew initially. Lemon zest and butter along with toasted brioche bread. Faded flowers and honey. Roasted nuts really begin to shine after an hour or so.

As always with Grand Siecle, this is a blend of three years, 2004, 2006, and 2007 for this 24th iteration. Quite the stately and baronial wine. Absolutely ready to drink now but obviously will just continue to grow into itself more over the years. 55/45 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir from 11 Grand Crus, poise is the key here. All is in balance and form. Equally thrilling and reflective. Grace and power. It’s a bit stunning at times.

Very precise and focused, this is pure and driven in the mouth. Citrus is all over the palate, along with crusty bread and fresh herbs. There’s plenty of minerality but also an innate savory nature, as well. This just goes on and on and on, leading to an impeccably long and delicious finish. I’m in lust. A a Tête de Cuvée that drinks like one. — 4 years ago

100% Cab from Soda Canyon and Atlas Peak. Aged for 20 months in 42% New French Oak. Mild tannins and very European in style. Notes of sweet baking spices, tamarind, cedar, vanilla, and black fruit (Blackberries, Cherries, etc.). This one is right up there with Blacklist XIII, which was a 50/50 blend of Cab and Merlot, but very similar in style and structure. — 6 years ago

Unique experience. Far more exuberant than what the vintage would suggest, it jumped out of the glass with a bouquet I would not normally associate with wine. He gave me a strong reminder of men’s cologne “eau de lierre” (it jumped right out because I used to wear it.) which, according to the manufacturer means galbanum, cyclamene and rosewood. Hidden behind the solemn wood and dark flowers there’s a green core of fresh pyrazenes that lifts up the darkness on the palate and gives way to a lingering acidity  — 2 years ago

Estate was founded in the late 17th Century. This period was known as the Grand Siecle, or "great century", in reference to Louis XIV's 1661 accession to the French throne. This second label from Pichon Baron is deep Ruby with aromas of black fruits, cacao and sweet spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and black cherry with espresso, cacao and licorice. Fine tannins, long finish, ending with fruit, cedar and spice. — 4 years ago

Another sleeper...go get some of this before the price jumps. This red blend has great body and just enough tannins to keep the pallet moving forward with every bite you take. This one will handle moderately spicy foods...including seafood that’s mildly spicy and fresh. — 5 years ago

The 9th and final Wine in the Gevrey Chambertin Grand Cru bracket. Quite a rich dense crimson in colour. A tarry nuance to the black cherries on nose and palate. A medium to full bodied palate finishing with some astringency. This is the 4th year I have been to this tasting and I have learnt that Dugat Py make their Burgundies on the large side. For that reason I was able to pick this as the Dugat Py in this blind tasting knowing the identities but not the order of service. Also my least pointed in this 9 wine bracket. — 6 years ago
