Merus

Invicta Sonoma County Red Blend 2019

Dark ruby garnet. Inviting nose and juicy medium palate of plum, black currant, red apple, and a hint of balsam. Medium plus tannins. Medium acidity. Medium long finish. An amazing and affordable introduction to the Merus range that proves quality doesn’t have to cost big bucks. An excellent pair with beef and other red wine fare thanks to that Old World-esque acidity. Drink now through 2026. — 4 years ago

Merus Merlot 2017

Beautiful ripe plum and chocolate notes balanced with acidity. Perfect pairing for some game or even beef prepared in a mild way. Give it a try if you are a Merloy fan — 7 years ago

Easily my #WOTN Luscious, complex and stood up to the Merus wines which is not easy to do. Beautifully integrated and supple tannins with a one minute finish. Sad story on #CloudView but what a legacy. Now home the beautiful wines of #Continuum — 10 years ago

Black Kite Cellars

Angel Hawk Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Had to try right out of the bottle, and we noted strong red and black fruit on the nose. Loads of fruit flavors with a hint of baking spices, and super complex like the older Merus cabs. After 30 minutes, OMG! This is the best Pinot I've ever had. We had another Black Kite recently and thought that was amazing, but this is out of the ballpark. You have to try this wine. A great bottle for Thanksgiving dinner. — 7 years ago

Foley Johnson

Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2012

Very good Pinot from 2012 Santa Rita Hills around Santa Barbara. Foley has many wineries and is a high quality producer. Owns Merus and Chalk Hill also. Nice spice and vanilla flavor on top of cherry fruit — 12 years ago

Booker Vineyard

Fracture 24 Months Syrah 2013

Also from a couple of nights ago. A bit unfair to try and follow that 2011 Merus...but this one from Booker was pretty damn good. 24 months in barrel, this syrah is ready to drink. Firm but sweet tannins, the palate evolves beautifully with layers of blackberry, violet, and jam...but not jammy: had plenty of backbone and acidity to keep it alive on the palate. Eric Jensen told me at a tasting I had with him on my 50th birthday tour through Paso a few years back that he prefers his wines much younger than what I’m tasting now. To each his/her own - and Eric is onviously a great winemaker - but in my opinion this one right now blows away the same wine I pulled from my cellar 2-3 years ago. But, no matter when you open this one up, it’s terrific! — 6 years ago

Merus 4 Rioja Tempranillo 2004

This was such an incredible surprise. The fuller side of medium everything. Medium plus body, medium plus acid, just the perfect layering of oak and the beautiful length that never disappoints. I freaking loved this wine, and I loved taking it to dinner. Great with charcuterie, flatbread pizza as well as porchetta. Its wines like this, that make me love wines like this. — 12 years ago
