Becker Vineyards

Iconoclast Texas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Visiting Fredericksburg TX for a few days. This is TX hill country and has a big winery community. Never tried any TX wines before but found a few surprises here. We tasted at Becker earlier today but not this wine. $30 on the restaurant wine list. Becker wasn’t our favorite stop but it is the only local winery represented on their list. Overall local wines seemed overpriced compared to CA wines. Just realized we had an older vintage (2018) on our last trip from Houston to Anaheim. It’s interesting that most of the grapes used in the local wines come from Lubbock (panhandle) area. Don’t know where these grapes came from, or what varietals are present. — 5 years ago

Cremisan Cellars

Star of Bethlehem Baladi 2015

An interesting Red blend from Bethlehem.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and nice long legs.

Tangy finish with medium, round tannins.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, vanilla, wood, earth, barnyard, vegetables, spices, smoke and dark coffee.

Soft and smooth and very enjoyable. Feels like an old world wine.

Had it blind and called Austrian red. Wrong.

Made with local grapes grown around the winery. Organic.

13% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$20.

9.3

Had this last 7 months ago. The acidity has calmed down a little and is letting more of the fruit play the star. I’m upping from 9.2 to 9.3. Just gonna keep getting better!! — 6 years ago

Foregone Conclusion Letkeman Family Vineyard Alicante Bouschet 2017

Alicante Bouschet is typically used for color - Forgone Conclusion is certainly pigment enhanced, thick skinned, and sooty - almost alarmingly lean at 10.64% ABV. If you’re ok with raw, it works. Tart notes of red blueberries, blackberries, and nail salon varnish. — 6 years ago

Sure is @Tom Casagrande It falls in line with southold’s style - lean, raw, dense. This is good but not as good as their best

Star Merlot Blend 2018

This 2018 is 100% Merlot. Opens to a subtle floral note with black cherry and cranberries. Medium body with a nice mouthfeel. The finish is a little smoky and bit of a back of the throat spice. — 7 months ago

Pape Star Central Coast Red Rhone Blend 2016

A nice dark cherry red color with a wide brim. The nose opens up with some nice spice and green earth. Plenty of funk and fun on display here. Dense moss and forest woodland screams before the bright red fruits show up to play. The floral aromatics really set this one off.

45/30/25 of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, this is a Central Coast take on Chateauneuf du Pape and baby, it works. It’s a gentle onslaught of goodness. Mounds and mounds of bright, fresh fruits come in waves. Wild strawberry, red cherry, and raspberry. A hint of dark chocolate with menthol and more greenery. It seems like people don’t know how good these are and that’s a crying shame. Beautiful wine and so hard to beat.

Kuhlman Cellars

Escondido Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Good SB at a rather solid price that almost makes you feel like you're stealing it from the vineyard. The nose of this wine is lemongrass, some herb, hint of wet rock. Enters with sharp acidity, lemon rind, kiwi, limestone influence, a little bit of tropical character. Really nice hot weather poolside sipper. Considering our heat index is still near 100, these couple of bottles will serve a very nice purpose. This would go well with lemon sherbet. This is sort of a new offering for Kuhlman and so far this particular release has remained very solid. — 7 years ago

@Mark Flesher Perhaps, that's why I like Calais so much aside from their fantastic wines! I always prefer to give my business to people such as Ben. I think French winemakers are the only hope for good Texas wine. I might be heading out that area next month and will pay a visit to Kuhlman. Any that are a must try? Thanks Mark!

@Stephen Pierron it sort of just depends on what they have open. They have an informative food pairing tasting that you have to register for usually a few weeks in advance. I would recommend that tasting to the standard tasting that usually is not as informative. All of their white wines are solid. Their reds are mostly good, but there are some misses.
