Château Lestage

Listrac-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. Another great value from this Listrac estate. Dark red. Black fruit, less oaky compared to the 2018. Good concentration, a more extracted style compared to fellow Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Lilian Ladouys 2019 (Saint-Estephe) tasted alongside, but excellent value at 11(!) euros. — 5 years ago

Alannera

Nero d'Avola 2016

Light tannic wine with a sharp cherry finish. Nice pairing with our handmade pasta dishes. Delighted to run into a fellow Nebraskan in the restaurant. — 7 years ago

Ata Rangi

Martinborough Pinot Noir 2009

At an old school mate and fellow Pinot nut up at Maroochydore. Never had an aged Ata Rangi before and it was marvellous. Thanks John! Always one of the best Pinots in New Zealand, at 10 years it has dropped a lot of the aromatic red fruits of its youth and become much more Burgundian with savoury earthy mushroom and compost heap nuances. A beautiful wine. — 7 years ago

Pétrus

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

My first Petrus was a very special thing. So intense and seductive, really something out of the ordinary. It kept begging my nose going back to the glass and harmoniously gave back so much pleasure. Could feel its presence very clear after a few minutes. Incredible. 98-100. Unique and delicious. — 2 years ago

Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo 2016

Smells and looks exactly like a good Langhe. Brick red with aromas of dried cherry, menthol, mint and other herbs. Medium weight palate - M plus tannins; M plus acid - typical again. As good as anything I’ve had as a Rosso from Piedmont. Myself and fellow judges made this the Grand Champion of the Toowoomba Wine Show in 2019. Also Trophy, best other variety red, 2018 Adelaide Hills Wine Show. Have written previously about Steve Pannell’s expertise with alternative varieties. — 4 years ago

Fort Walla Walla Cellars

Reserve Walla Walla Valley Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

A delicious swap with a fellow winery from Walla Walla Washington State - I traded a local wine for this amazing 2005 red Bordeaux blend wine.

This wine was kept well, and had just the perfect amount of age and fruit, with aromas and flavors of leather and black dried fruit.

My rating: If you can track down another bottle, I would buy it. As it is, their latest vintages are also quite tasty, too.

Campi Nuovi

Montecucco Sangiovese 2019

Ruby to garnet
Crunchy
Big cherry, black truffle, mushrooms, preserved peaches, iron. Long and fresh.
This guy apparently has worked with all the top sangiovese handlers such as Palmucci, Gambelli, Manetti and so on, but lost the train to become famous and still he is doing the right thing
This is just more than an ordinary Montecucco and fits perfectly in the "serious sangiovese" bracket. I expect it to age beatifully for quite a while. Demeter producer.

Domaine Etienne et Sébastien Riffault

Les Quarterons Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2017

I’ve heard for years about the wildly extroverted and extra-ordinary Sancerre wines from Sebastien Riffault. His wines are an outlier of ripeness in a sea of lean high acid chalky juice. Rich with an amber glow.

He picks his Sauvignon Blanc at the last minute to reach a level of ripeness you’d never expect could come from the tiny cold pocket of the Loire.

Now I like both styles, but this is super fun and something completely new to me.

Think juicy peach, fresh apricot, and bright yellow pineapple. But still with high acid - nothing flabby.

Solid blend for the price point. Definitely give it a try. Let it open a little bit for it’s full potential. If I find it for $12 again, I’m buying at least 2. — 7 years ago
