Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009

Aromatics of black fruits with a touch of menthol (eucalyptus in these parts). Not as herbaceous as the northern part of Margaret River up In Wilyabrup. Oak is noticeable on the palate initially (even at 16 years). One of the few Cab Merlot blends as their top Cuvée (Cullen is another) in preference to straight Cabernet Sauvignon. On the palate ripe black fruits and mulberry. Finishes with fine tannins. HH has a long drinking window on this, up to 2039 which I don’t think many will have the willpower to follow- including me. — a year ago

Castello di Amorosa

Voyager Vineyard Sangiovese 2019

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose with cherries, raspberries, light wood, vegetables, barnyard, tobacco leaf, eucalyptus, spices and peppercorn.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, currants, licorice, spices, cedar, chocolates, tobacco, herbs and black pepper.

Nice finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a tasty and interesting Sangiovese from Napa valley. Feels like a light super Tuscan. Easy drinking and good with food.

Good by itself, but needs 45 minutes in a decanter to open up properly, so be patient.

Still young and will be better in the next few years. This Single Vineyard is showing mild complexity at this point.

A very interesting interpretation of Sangiovese. I had the 2018 last year and it is very consistent.

A blend of 97% Sangiovese with 3% Merlot. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (35% new).

14.7% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$45.

Reserve Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

Clear, deep garnet colour. Clean, pronounced blackcurrant and chocolate aromas. Dry with high acidity and tannins that are beautifully balanced and smooth. Full bodied with a long finish. Juicy blackcurrant, chocolate and mocha with a lovely vanilla flavour. An outstanding wine and a marvellous accompaniment to rack of lamb. — 6 years ago

Chenin Blanc 2015

A rare Australian Chenin Blanc, very pale, light gold colour with a subtle nose of citrus blossom and lemon. The palate is oily and lush with lively acidity and flavours of lemon and yellow apple. Delicious. — 8 years ago

Domaine Naturaliste

Morus Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

See previous Delectable note. Very dark Ruby in colour - opaque. A beautiful fragrant black fruited nose of mulberry, cassis and dried herbs. It’s nice to vary our producers from Margaret River and this is one that one doesn’t often see. This was most impressive - full bodied palate showing blackberry, eucalypt, bay leaf, capsicum, plum - in fact all of the Cabernet descriptors. Graphite texture with velvety tannins. This is from the southern end of Margs near the likes of Cape Mentelle and Voyager Estate. To repeat the previous note this won a major Trophy in London for best Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River. This could cellar for at least another 5 years. — 2 years ago

Happy hour at Voyager (11/1/19). Crisp and dry, had notes of apple and floral (that last one might be b/c of that lady’s perfume...) Very nice, had two glasses. Went well with oysters and buttered hush puppies. — 7 years ago

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This is a medium-bodied, ruby coloured elegant wine from Margaret River, exhibiting flavours of blackberries, and chocolate, it has a smooth mouthfeel and well-integrated tannins which should improve with age.

Cape Mentelle

Margaret River Shiraz 2010

Nothing to add much to my notes of 67 weeks ago except to say it is not showing as much oak now as it was then. Black pepper notes. As written before I feel Margaret River is best suited to Cabernet but if you are going to grow Shiraz it needs to be in the south where Cape Mentelle and Voyager are situated. Not so much in Wilyabrup in the north of Margaret River. Tasted the last bottle 50 weeks later on 27th August 2022 with similar notes - black pepper and black cherry notes. Probably one of the better Shiraz from Margaret River. — 5 years ago
