Walsh Family Wine

A. P. Birks

Wendouree Clare Shiraz 2011

Amazingly a rich ruby red for the age of the wine and the wet vintage. 14 years is young for a Wendouree Shiraz but 2011 was a difficult wet vintage in South Australia saved here by the deep rooted ancient vines. Aromatics of iodine, camphor, eucalypt, liquorice and medicinal notes - touches of menthol and tar. Very satisfying and easy for us to drink the whole bottle! Postscript: I had to mention a great descriptor from Gary Walsh “I love its mineral character and aniseed vapour trail.” — a year ago

Lola Red Blend 2019

Concentrated and brooding. Mostly Syrah with Cabernet and Grenache. Black peppercorns. Wild, brambly fruit. Juicy. Assertive and better with ample air. Biodynamically farmed. Great with Beef Bourguignon. — 4 years ago

Loudoun County Viognier 2018

Gifted and delicious Virginia white. Apple taste and no alcohol on the nose. — 5 years ago

Fraser Gallop

Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Medium bodied, menthol/eucalypt, mild spice, black fruited, fine tannin, good length. Feels a bit dilute compared to the 2014, and a lesser wine on the second night. Gary Walsh gave this 94 but I can’t quite see that. — 6 years ago

Virginia Viognier 2014

Nate Walsh and his Terroir Testimony. Year after year, he crafts liquid, articulate, honeydew wine...this one aged to perfection! 2014 allowed for plenty of acidity - and this the ideal match to a honey-baked ham with Roo Scalloped Potatoes!! — 8 years ago

Goodbye Horses Shenandoah Valley Riesling 2017

I really like this at the Bar Takeover @Walsh. I knew then that this had a food pairing destiny. Indeed, the wife made a left-fielder: ShrimpScampi Lasagna!?! The lemon-mineral oil driven tonic was spot on...powerful enough to cut through massive ricotta bomb. The creamy texture was beautiful and sensual. Thank you Ben — 6 years ago

Bethany Ridge Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Excellent sav blanc with fine balance, bite, and zest. Great food wine. Great winery! 2017 vintage. — 7 years ago

Te Mata Estate

Coleraine Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2016

Gary Walsh gave this 97, so 3 of us went thirds on a single bottle ($100) to take our drinking into new territory. Drank over 3 hours. Continually evolved with ridiculous complexity and length. No more than medium bodied with a spectrum of black, violet, red fruits. Herbal and spice tones, each of us picked up something different. Beautifully fresh fruited, tannin hardly there yet clearly there. I can’t quite do 97 as I’m a little skewed to something a bit bigger, so 96+ for me. — 8 years ago

Reserve Cabernet Franc 2012

Varietally correct - just a little too much of that Loudoun Co twang. More on the tar/graphite side of the CF spectrum. Still impressive that at 12 years, it maintained its form factor - impressive winemaking by Mr. Walsh. — 2 years ago

October One Vineyard

Loudoun County Albarino 2020

Very nice build by Nate Walsh as winemaker for the husband / wife owners at OctoberOne. Their fruit - sense of place - mouthfeel and apricots galore. If Jefferson Viognier and a King Family Chardonnay had a baby —> this — 3 years ago

Estate Club Select Nebbiolo 2012

Wow! My cellar aging project scores another ‘discovery’ win. At almost 10 years from harvest, this Nate Walsh built beauty was doing what aged Nebbiolo is supposed to do! Using Horton fruit (Orange, Va), this bottle has metamorphosed into a seductive herbal-rose tea. It’s acidity is almost non-detectable, yet it was the perfect pairing for Tuscan-sausages & peppers w/creamy mash. The flavors of this Nebbiolo are so alive that they danced effortlessly with the sautéed peppers and complimented the herbs in the locally made Tuscans. Just wow…1 ‘12 remains plus 2 ‘10’s. — 4 years ago

Roi Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Terrifically balanced Cabernet with just a kiss of bret. Nice mix of red and black fruits plus refreshing acidity and soft tannin. Delicious on its own but would be stellar with tenderloin. — 8 years ago
