Seavey Vineyard

Caravina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Popped and poured from a magnum; no formal notes. This is probably the third or fourth time I’ve had the 2014 Caravina and while it’s still quite primary, this is the best showing yet. Bright red and black fruits with tobacco, a whiff of bell pepper and some baking spices. Firm structure with grippy tannins. The acid is elevated but welcome, particularly since it helped to slice through the fat of the prime rib. Finish is long and satisfying. Drink now and through 2034. — 4 years ago

It was 19 in TX Tues, hailed yesterday, and is 80 degrees today. Welcome to spring in TX.

I love the info on the back of these bottles as they give detail to the base vintage and when they were disgorged. This is ‘08 base, disgorged 2017.

Right up my alley. I’d call this oxidative, but not overly so. There is a Krug-ness about this style. It’s toasty and savory with a little caramel, toffee and baked apple. Creamy. For my personal taste, while I enjoy all champagne cold, this is one of the few styles that holds up well even once it warms up slightly as there isn’t a lot of tartness here.

We are opening something special as well tonight, @Shay A. Had quarter size hail up here but no damage and already had neighbor inspect the roof! Might be a Champagne night for us as well to toast our week of Spring 🤣!

@Shay A Probably the best NV on the market in my opinion.

@David T : I love it! I’m going to re-stock.

@Ryan Vento : Stay safe down there! We all know that spring in TX is a roll of the dice.

@Mark Flesher : Glad there wasn’t any damage! Think we escaped unscathed as well.

@Bob McDonald : I’m inclined to agree with you. Can’t think of anything else that I would take over this at the price.

Napa Valley Red Blend 2019

This is a highly extracted style of Cabernet with loads of cassis, black cherry, blackberry, a touch of mint and a heavy overlay of chocolate, oaky vanilla, smoke and baking spice. It’s so big I find it somewhat ungainly and lacking enough acidity to offset the weighty fruit. There is surprisingly little tertiary development so far though it will be welcome when it arrives. Medium plus finish. — a year ago

Very nice but at this stage feels slightly reserved. Hint of sweetness which is expected and welcome. Nice intensity and depth. Great acid. — 4 years ago

Trocken Kabinett Spätburgunder 2018

2018 vintage. Vacation wine!!!! Very welcome in the face of continued uncertainty after such a whirlwind year and a half. Tart cranberry, crabapple, unripe cherry, lime, autumn leaves, dust, black rocks, rosehips, tea. Great alternative for Burgundy lovers. — 5 years ago

Krug

Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

Krug is always most welcome, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. This is edition 169. A bit more yeasty and slightly less acidic than previous versions, to my taste. But if you like the Krug style - which we do very much - it hits the spot per usual.

My wife used to work with Fritz Hatton, proprietor of Arietta wines and auctioneer for Zachys. Fritz always says to have a half bottle of champagne waiting in the fridge in case you need a “midnight snack”, and I have to agree with him!

Chester-Kidder Columbia Valley Red Blend 2010

Probably a little less amazeballs than the 2009 that Obama served the French president when he visited the white house, but still fantastic! A rustic sage and anise note are quite interesting as it lingers long after you swallow. Otherwise, the cherry and cola notes from the cab play off the juicy strawberry and leathery/fleshy notes of the Syrah. Damn this is good! — 7 years ago

Appropriate wine to welcome in the Spring. Watermelon rind, lemon/grapefruit oils, underlying herbaceous notes, with a moderate acid backbone. The 11.5% is a plus (but the wine really shines when paired with food) — 5 years ago

Silver Oak

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

2016 vintage opened December 2020. Leather and minerals on the nose. Not much happening on the front—no fruit to speak of, but there are some soft tannins that follow through to the back of the palate quite nicely though. The finish is quite unique, though.Without looking at the label I suspect this was aged in American oak, which gives it some leathery hi notes and some bite as you swallow. I wouldn’t give it the scores that the pros are giving it, a 9.3, only because this wine is kind of weak on the front of the palate. But it’s very drinkable, indeed! — 5 years ago
